Full Version: The 2006 TOP100

Alan Thomas
OK, I'm not going to publish the full, error-checked list until Sunday (to Members), BUT

Here are some scraps from the table, after I've made the first run at calculating the list. These are based on the unweighted results.

The DEAD LAST movie, based on an overall average score of 2.00 is a tie: A Home at the End of the World and Unfaithful. Home only received 12 votes, so it wouldn't have qualified in any case. Double losing.

Other movies in the (raw) bottom (cough) ten:
  • Pay it Forward
  • Eyes Wide Shut
  • Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai
  • Beauty and the Beast
  • Adaptation.
  • Slacker
  • Superman
  • Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
  • Sister Act
Other observations
  • I don't think Rosetta will be our #1 film, but it most likely will still be on the list
  • There probably will be a new film or two in the top ten
  • Highest raw score film that won't make the list: Europa '51 (which IS on the 2005 list). It only received eight votes. I'm not sure exactly where the cut-off will be, but it will be much higher than that.
  • Other high-scoring films that won't make the list due to inadequate numbers of votes--these will end up on the "obscure films" list: Repentance, Dream of Light, The Man Who Planted Trees, A Moment of Innocence, Therese, Make Way for Tomorrow, Molokai, Say Amen. Somebody -- each of these received <10 votes, below any possible cutoff value (which will probably be 17 - ~10%).
  • This year, the RAW scores actually would result in a VERY good list. I'll calculate the weighted scores, too, of course, for the official list. You folks rule!
PLEASE keep in mind that these are my calculations after one very loose pass at it. There may be errors.

Oh, and FWIW, I'll be publishing the list here for Members if anyone wants to check their access. No topics there (yet), but the forum is set up.
Alan Thomas
Well, I've completed my first pass at the final numbers (with weighted voting).

More teasers:
  • We finally have an English-language film--just one--in the top 10 -- and it ain't The Apostle (2005's top English-language film).
  • The next highest-ranking English-language film is at #18. Or #17, depending on how you see it. Also not The Apostle
  • The cut-off for vote quantity ended up at 14
  • With the weighting, the lowest score was 2.6; the highest was 6.7
  • Some films that we seem to miss very much will return to the top100
  • There are some films off the list for the very first time, some of which we'll miss dearly.
  • There's a documentary that's new to the list
  • The final vote count was 176!

IMHO, with the volume and refinement of nominations that we're up to, 100 just isn't cutting it. I may publish the Top200 on the primary listing, highlighting the Top100 but going on to the full 200.

Just a reminder: I'll publish the list for Members only on Sunday, August 6th. If you haven't already, now is a great time to support Arts & faith by purchasing a Membership. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until Monday, August 14th like everyone else.

Again: There still could be errors. I'm going to download the raw data once again and recompute the list from scratch. If the two results agree, I'm done!
MLeary
What is the Weir count? Can't you at least give us that?
Alan Thomas
Nope. And you're assuming that there IS a Weir count. wink.gif
MLeary
I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case, and it wouldn't necessarily rankle me. Is that at least a record for amounts of voters?
Alan Thomas
Oh, it would SO rankle you, c'mon!

Yes.

The count of submitted, completed questionnaires was slightly lower than last year. But I went through and looked at the questionnaires that had been saved but not submitted, and included the ones than had been more than 50% completed. I know a few folks didn't understand how to save and retrieve their questionnaires. (The system didn't include that capability last year.) Many of these were 100% complete, including the comments fields, etc., but hadn't been submitted.

I should clarify the timeline:
  • Sunday, August 6: Release of the top100 list to paid Members.
  • Monday, August 14: Release of the top100 to all registered users.
  • At some date after the 14th, I will update the database, create some additional documentation, send out a press release, and make the list available to the general public--let's say the 21st or 28th, depending on my time availability.
That last point means that folks should refrain from blogging/writing/linking until the 28th (to be safe).
Alan Thomas
Well -- "should" is the operative word. If they want the artsandfaith.com/t100 link to go to the 2006 list.
Alan Thomas
More teasers:
  • Seven films from the 2004 list will be returning to the list (after being absent in 2005).
  • There are twelve new entries on the list.
  • I didn't use 14 as the cut-off. Instead, I applied a tiered penalty system based on whether an entry was voted on by fewer than 20% or 10% of survey participants. (<5% making it impossible to get on the list.)
  • Twenty-six of the entries had been seen by less that 20% of the survey participants.
  • Ten of the entries had been seen by less than 10% of the survey participants.
  • I gave films bonuses based on their ranks from 2005, and based on their jury/first round status from 2004.
  • I take back what I said about the #2 English-language film. It's definitely at #15. The top English-language film is at #3. Neither is The Apostle.
  • One of the most dramatic changes is that a film currently on the list dropped all the way down to #220--even off the Top200, with bonuses!
Disclaimer: Again, I haven't verified the results yet. If I made an error in my calculations, these #s will change.
Alan Thomas
We'll see...there are some painful losses of (EXTREMELY) popular films, too, and Star Wars did not make it back on the list, so it's not like we've gone mainstream or anything.

The average # of votes received by an entry is 55, or around 30%. Here's a graph; the black line is a trendline.

"Twenty-six of the entries had been seen by less that 20% of the survey participants.
Ten of the entries had been seen by less than 10% of the survey participants."

I can't wrap my head around the mathematics of this. So there are 36 films on the list that have been seen by less than 20% of the people that voted. Would this then mean that out of everyone who has seen these films, an overwhelming majority voted for their inclusion?

What's the y-variable "Number of Entries/Film" mean?
Alan Thomas
Leary, maybe not overwhelmingly, but enough to get them on the list

Buckeye, an entry can be one or more films (e.g. a trilogy or remake). The label should be understood to mean "Quantity of entries (films)" (at a given number of votes). "Entries/film" is confusing (and wrong--it should say "films")--sorry!
Alan Thomas
IIRC, they do *not* overlap. meaning that the overal percentage would be just over a third (around 36%). Don't hold me to that, thought, since I don't have the database open at the moment.

My guesses for the top English language films: Chariots of Fire and Magnolia.
Alan Thomas
Nope; neither is in either position.
Alan Thomas
Nope. Just a few more hours now. I'll probably publish it at around midnight EST, so all the West coast folks will get the "first" crack at it. I haven't finished double-checking yet. Heck, I haven't started double-checking yet!
Alan Thomas
The list is published, here (for now).
