I have worked in the auto industry for a good long while now, and I can tell you who killed the electric car: Leftists hippies killed the electric car. Here's how:

Electric cars are really not the solution to our energy problem. Electricity is not free; it needs to be produced somewhere. Where and how? Through burning fossil fuels? If so, then electric cars only introduce further waste into the system, since no conversion of energy in one form to energy in another is 100% efficient.

Would the electricity be produced by nuclear plants? Good solution, but the leftist hippies have managed to keep them from being built for several decades now. I know this because I used to be one. I even attended a No Nukes rally.
