So, I got to thinking about those ridiculously long Netflix queues. You know, you have over 100+ items on your queue and are on the 2 DVDs per month plan...
In addition, new stuff comes out and you move it to the top of the queue, pushing stuff you put on there farther down.
So I'm interested in what's on the list but not moving up..you know, the stuff you don't want to take off, but the stuff you don't see ever making it to the top of the queue and actually getting sent to you.
In the spirit of this fascinating window into our members and what we are ambivalent about, I've picked a number at sort of random...I figure 31 is low enough that most people will have it, but not so high that it is a number that won't routinely get jumped over by new releases.
Without further ado then, what is 31st in your Netflix queue? When and why did you put it on your list, and do you think you'll ever actually watch it?
Peace.
Ken
Oh, and for the record. My #31 is something called
Shock Corridor. I had to read the description to know why it was there. I think I read a blurb in another forum of people talking about Samuel Fuller (maybe when something was rereleased) and thought, oh, I've never seen any of his films. So I threw a few in my queue. Will I ever see it? Hmmm. Not sure.
Here is a description:
QUOTE
Ambitious reporter Johnny (Peter Breck) wants to win a Pulitzer Prize by solving a murder that was committed in an insane asylum and witnessed by only three inmates, from whom the police have been unable to extract anything about the case. With the help of a psychiatrist and his girlfriend, Johnny succeeds in getting committed to the asylum, where he tracks down the witnesses and is slowly driven insane himself. Samuel Fuller writes and directs.

So Darrel, what prompted you to add this to your queue, and do you think you'll ever watch it?
I don't remember if I added it from Netflix recommendation or from one of the friend's ratings (3 of my circle give it

). Now that I've looked at it again, I may try to time it to come up sometime when I'm giving blood (Apheresis takes a couple hours and so is ideal for watching a movie.)

My #31 is Kiarostami's Ten, a film I will definitely watch at some point. I placed it in my queue initially about six or so months ago, with a bunch of other Iranian films I was interested in. I have also enjoyed other Kiarostami films I've seen (Where is the Friends House, Taste of Cherry, The Wind Will Carry Us, and especially Close-Up).
I've tried to stay fairly realistic about what I add, and really, what I delete. Thus, my queue has shrunk from a high in the 130's or so down to its current weight, a svelte 64.

QUOTE(Netflix Queue)
Peter and Paul
Director Robert Day's epic TV miniseries follows apostles Peter (Robert Foxworth) and Paul (Anthony Hopkins) as they spread the gospel of nascent Christianity while striving to keep the faith. Despite violent opposition from without and endless tumult from within, the two disciples unite in their attempts to win converts but pay the ultimate price for their beliefs. Herbert Lom, José Ferrer and Jean Peters costar in this Emmy-winning production.
I have only had Netflix for a few months, so my queue has not had the chance to filter through waves of additions and subtractions. I will probably see this, but not likely soon.

31 out of 181:
Husbands & Wives
I have an unlimited number of DVD's per month, 2 at a time. I used to have 4 at a time but as am now back at uni and theoretically have less DVD watching time, I reduced it. I also don't update it that regularly as am not that concerned about seeing new films on DVD as I usually catch most of what I want to see at the cinema.
I should mention that my DVD rental allows you to "collapse" an entire tv series together if you choose to watch them in order. I have the Sopranos series 1 and 24 series 1 prior to 31 on my list, and I counted them as 1 entry.

Doctor Zhivago: Part I (2002)

This British miniseries created especially for television is a remake of the classic 1965 film. Hans Matheson plays the title role of the doctor trapped between the affections of his wife, Tonya (Alexandra Maria Lara), and feelings he has for his mistress, Lara (Keira Knightley). Throughout war and turmoil in their native Russia, the love triangle continues … but soon, the beginning of the Russian Revolution will change their lives forever.
I think Ruthie put it in the queue after we watched the original (1965) Doctor Zhivago a few months ago.

Without further ado then, what is 31st in your Netflix queue? When and why did you put it on your list, and do you think you'll ever actually watch it?
Kitty Foyle (1940) Told via flashback, this bittersweet drama follows working girl Kitty Foyle (Ginger Rogers, who received the Best Actress Academy Award) as she chases her storybook dreams. While earning a living as a department store clerk, Kitty finds herself romantically entangled with two men: a weak-willed Philadelphia society scion (Dennis Morgan) and an unassuming physician (James Craig). Gladys Cooper plays Morgan's sniffish mother. ("sniffish"?)
I don't remember when I put this in my q., but it's one of those movies I kept hearing mentioned whenever I'd watch an episode of Biography with an old star, plus the plot sounds somewhat similar to Mildred Pierce, which is like the best movie ever.
I'll probably never watch it.

I've been thrilled with it. I can't really comment on how quickly they turn around the dvds, sending a new one when you send them the one you're finished with, since I've tended to get stuck with a few that I don't get around to watching, or that I watch but don't get around to writing up, so I haven't cranked through all that many, or noticed the speed of turnaround. But the freedom to keep a movie as long as you need it? Sweet. And I love their selection.
Also, I've often used the "Jump All Queues" button: costs $4.99, they send you the movie right away, even if you already have your full amount signed out. (I'm on the three-movie plan: if I JAQ a film, they send it as soon as they've got it, and I've got four. However, when I send any one of those back in, it doesn't trigger them sending my next queued dvd: they don't send another until my "movies in hand" are less than three. Does that make sense?)
Once I clear my backed-up copies of USHPIZIN (which I've watched three times but not gotten round to writing up) and the two Rossellinis (which I haven't managed to finish, OR write up), I'm intending on flying through a whole lot of movies that won't take as much time. So I guess I'll find out soon enough how they are on the turnaround time.
How many DVDs are you signed up for?

Eminently. FWIW, I've signed up for the 2-films-at-once service (with an unlimited number of DVDs per month, as opposed to the 6-DVDs-per-month plan). I've also signed up to pay for it quarterly, which costs less per quarter than paying for it monthly, but still, plunking down sixty bucks or more at one time for video rentals does give me pause.
: How many DVDs are you signed up for?
28. It's a real hodgepodge of stuff, and in a few cases I've signed up for every single disc in a series or set of discs. I frequently get DVDs out of the library (which lets you keep five at a time, plus of course it's free), but the library is sometimes slow in getting new releases, and there are other gaps besides, so ...

But since I don't really watch my queue in order - anything below #10 is really only there to remind me that they have the title, I'm constantly scanning the list and grabbing things from down below to jump to the top of the list - HH may do just fine, especially since he's got that new flick out, and I tend to cluster my viewing.
As for having a dvd for an excessively long time, I now have an informal rule that if I've had something more than three weeks, I watch it or send it back. Keep the flow going. I can always re-queue it when the interest returns.

I've noticed there's a lot of commentary in this thread about losing money by letting DVDs sit because you don't feel like watching what shows up. We did this with Kagemusha. I like Ron's policy of 3 weeks "in or out", but am wondering if anyone has come up with a good "queue management". I list so many movies I should see as the mood strikes me, and then I end up with 4 or 5 Kurosawa's in a row (and now that my wife has written down my password, 4 or 5 Masterpiece Theater snoozefests in a row).
Anyone have a system to balance out films you know you should see with lighter pieces to take the edge off?
BethR
Jun 20 2007, 12:49 PM
A system? No, but I do check the queue now and then and move things up and down, or alternate "heavy" and "lighter" pieces. Frex, if we have a TV series, I alternate the discs with various movies.
