Hey everybody, a friend of mine is teaching a class about faith and film at Greenville College (it's Christian) and is looking for suggestions. Here's what he had to say:

QUOTE
So I'm teaching this class on Jesus in the Media and am showing a film series to freshman that focuses on Hollywood critique of faith, Jesus, Christianity, and especially Christians. Do you have any suggestions on films I could show? I am starting out pretty easy with films like; Saved, Dogma, The Life of Brian, The Last Temptation, Jesus Camp, but am up in the air after that. There are a lot of films we could watch but these are pretty conservative and 'green' kids so I am debating showing Blue, White, Red and things of that nature. Any suggestions would be great.

I'll try to get him to swing by and join the discussion.

Point him to the Top 100.

Need to define what he means by "Hollywood" critique of faith, etc. Would that include Pasolini's Gospel According to St. Matthew?

He can look at Johnston's books and others we spoke of here for coverage of many films.

All he needs can be found at artsandfaith.com/top100

More than any film I can think of, I'd use The Big Kahuna--it offers a very sympathetic but hard-edged critique of Christians (not of Jesus).

If he wants to teach film history / theory, I'd use Sunrise, Ordet, etc.
