Again, sorry about the commercial intro...

...Run, Fat Boy, Run is one of the funniest films I've seen in a long while. Schwimmer is confident behind the camera, and demonstrates beyond doubt that he knows how to handle the pacing of a comedy movie. Pegg is hilarious, and I think on balance I preferred this film to Hot Fuzz (2007). Yes, it's that good.

A few people around here have seen it and they seem to think it's good. I think I'm unlikely to catch it before I get back from Morocco.

I guess I'll watch it eventually, but it has little appeal. Neither did Hot Fuzz - I think I don't immediately warm to something that is comedy first and foremost rather than being something which has some substance but also happens to be funny. Which doesn't mean I won't enjoy it when I see it; I just don't ever feel the urge to watch a comedy.

....

Hot Fuzz? If there's a movie that fits into the "substance, but also very funny" category it's that movie.

The 45 minutes I sat through before I walked out deserve 05stars.gif .

It's a disaster. Pegg tries hard, but almost nothing works. The slapstick is obvious and poorly executed. Thandie Newton is as radiant as usual, but she's utterly unbelievable as a character. Hank Azaria is spectacularly miscast. And the setup to the marathon training section lasts for almost half of the movie. There's a cute segment or two about Newton's young son who is preoccupied with The Lord of the Rings. The editing is terrible. When Pegg and Newton have conversations, the back-and-forth close-ups make it hard to believe that the two are even standing in the same room.

This is about what I expected after watching the trailer just now. I'm a little disappointed to see Pegg doing slapstick after his great collaborations with Edgar Wright and Nick Frost. I wouldn't really have pegged Schwimmer for a director, either, but I don't suppose I can think of a reason he'd automatically be bad at it.

It smells like a cheesy romantic comedy that will entertain many for 2 hours and not much longer. Pegg's talents are better used elsewhere I'd think.

I agree. Thandie Newton looked stunning, and I enjoy Pegg, but I've seen Saved By the Bell episodes with better direction and plausibility than what was put together. Then, at the end, I saw it - Directed by David Schwimmer. "Oh, now it makes sense."
