I'm going to be writing a series of blog articles focusing on "Sales" in film, both how salesman are portrayed on the big screen and what insights real-world salesmen can glean from the films. I need help compiling a list of movies to feature (it can range from retail sales to car sales to business sales). Here's what I have so far (* denotes films I've seen):

  • The Big Kahuna*
  • The Pursuit of Happyness*
  • Glengarry Glen Ross*
  • The Death of a Salesman
  • Door to Door* (it's been awhile since I've seen this one, I'll have to watch it again to decide if it fits)
  • Cadillac Man
  • Breakfast of Champions* (again, it's been awhile, but I remember Bruce Willis is a car salesman)
  • Employee of the Month* (this is a stretch, but it's the only retail sales themed film I can think of)
  • Salesman (the Maysles brothers [Grey Gardens] documentary about door to door Bible salesmen)
  • Big Fish* (a stretch maybe, but Ewan McGregor is a traveling salesman for awhile and the "big fish" stories certainly tie in)

Anyone have any further suggestions?

Isn't Tom Cruise selling a masculinity program in Magnolia?

William H. Macy sells cars -- and rust protection! -- in Fargo, right?

The Maysles documentary Salesman features door-to-door Bible salesmen.

The Shop Around the Corner or You've Got Mail
Personally, I think the sales scene/punchline in In The Good Old Summertime takes the cake, even tho tSAtC is a better film (YGM...um, notsomuch).

Does the scene where the customer asks for a refund in Breaking Away count?
How about the Eugene Levy sequence in Serendipity?

I'd like to stick to movies that are more on theme than just a scene or two, but I see some good suggestions here. I can't believe I didn't think of The Shop Around the Corner. Doh!

I'm not familiar with In The Good Old Summertime, what's that one about?

Is the only documentary we've listed Salesman? I can't believe there aren't more docs...

I think I'll be starting my series with Glengarry Glen Ross since I'm already familiar with it and it's easily accessible. So I've got some time to solidify the rest, I'm hoping to do a 10-part series altogether.

I also thought of The Office, but I'm not sure if I want to venture into television.

Thanks everyone!

It's the first remake of Shop Around the Corner, reinvented as a musical, starring Judy Garland, Van Johnson, Buster Keaton, and S.Z. 'Cuddles' Sakall (from Casablanca, Ball of Fire, and Christmas in Connecticut). It's a very faithful remake, some scenes lifted directly from the original, but in beautiful technicolor and the priceless singing from Judy Garland. It's nice to compare this and tSAtC side by side. The scene which, I think, plays very well is the sequence of events that led to a store's mass purchase of a particular item, at Judy Garland's insistence, and then the occassional flashes of this product's downgrading of price in ensuing scenes.

Looks like TCM will play this on Christmas Eve, at 9:45 am EST.

My first entry, on Glengarry Glen Ross is here. I'll be doing a new film every week until I run out of related movies to cover or I get bored... Heh.
