Full Version: iPod Journal

Michael Todd
I do not have a blog. Maybe I should get one. Right now, I am in nursing school. I work at night as a janitor at a coal mine. I never owned an iPod before this job, but I've gotten so I listen to many hours of programing, lectures, and sermons each week.

A few weeks ago, I started journaling what I listen to each night. I've shared this with some friends, and I wonder if you have any interest. If there is interest, I will continue to post on here weekly.

Enjoy!

The best downloads continue to be This American Life and Bethel Church in Redding, CA. Rob Bell is back at his church, and I enjoyed his sermons titled "Joy" and "Glory" which he delivered in December. Fresh Air and Car Talk continue to be a staples in my rotation, plus I've added 60 Minutes' audio podcast of their program. I've listened to several sermons by Matt Chandler, a young pastor of a large church which is outside of the Dallas. If one likes Piper and Driscoll, one will like Chandler. If one can't stand Piper and Driscoll, don't bother with Chandler. I don't like either, yet I still listened to seven sermons by Chandler. I am not sure what that says about me. Perhaps I am a glutton for punishment.

Regarding the Einstein Relativity lectures, I do not know whether I recommend them or not. At least I made it through them, which is more than I can say for Bart Ehrman. Alas, they were a difficult listen. He talked fast, and used physics and mathematics terms that I was not readily familiar with. I learned stuff, but I missed out on a lot of what he taught on.

The surprise of this list is SaintCast. The Catholics have put out some really terrific podcasts. The Daily Breakfast is okay, but the SaintCast is a worthy listen. I've only downloaded the first episode, which is about Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, but there are many episodes in iTunes, and I look forward to hearing more about the different saints of our Catholic brethren.

Michael Todd
For some unknown reason, This American Life from this past weekend was not put up on the website until tonight, so this past week the sole leader in the best download I listened to is Bethel Church in Redding, CA. Both Danny Silk's and Bill Johnson's messages were great.

Luke Timothy Johnson's Early Christianity: Experience of the Divine was very good. He brought up a very good point I have ruminated on quite a bit in the past week. He said that what one sees when the history of Christianity is examined is that there are two streams: the institutional religion and the popular religion. The history that is recorded is that of the institutional religion and those who serve the religion's institutions. Glossolalia, healing, exorcism, and other controversial religious practices were either suppressed, adopted, frowned upon, or taught against by the institution.

This comparison of the institutional to the popular is not new. I often hear part of what Johnson described as institutional by charismatics as the spirit of religion. Regardless, I have two thoughts which float to the top of my stewing on this. First, it is true, there is a difference between the institutional and the popular. I do not know whether my senior pastor speaks or prays in tongues. I am not sure how he feels about laying on hands for healing prayer. Does he receive visions when in prayer? I know that in four years at my church, he has never preached or offered to do the mentioned practices in public. Within the populace of the congregation, all of those acts are occurring, regularly. Is he aware of it? Will anyone know in a hundred years that many lay members of First United Methodist Church in Madisonville, KY were blessed by with the same gifts of the Holy Spirit that were poured out on the early church in the book of Acts? If the institution does not know and does not record it, then I do not see how anyone would know in future generations. This makes me wonder if these gifts ever "died" out.

The second thing I wonder about is this divide between the clergy and laity, the institutional and the popular. I understand leadership, but I have never understood religion as an institution. Jesus seemed to bypass the institution of His day. Did He sit at the feet of a rabbi? Did He go to the Jewish equivalent of seminary? Curiously, Paul did go through the system, and sat at Gamaliel's feet, but is that what he counts on his resume? At the beginning of 2 Corinthians 3, Paul makes a statement about human versus spiritual credentials. I do not like to feed the revolutionary in me, but meditating on what the institution has done to the Spirit makes me want to light a torch and grab a pitchfork.

On the non-religious side of things (sorta) NPR's Fresh Air from January 2nd is well worth the listen. Terry interviews Denzel Washington. His father was a COGIC pastor. She probes into his faith, and I was really surprised by his answers. I sometimes think black entertainers get a pass when they talk about Jesus, the Bible, or Christianity. I often see it as something which is permitted, almost in a patronizing way, by people I will label as white secular elitists. I am not ragging on Gross. I actually like her very much, she is not too bad, but it is something I have noted for a long time. Regardless, Denzel impressed me with his responses. He was intense, and even after the interview shifts from his childhood, back to his career, he is clear in expressing why his faith informs every role he plays. I found it to be a breath of fresh air.

The best new thing I've personally discovered this week is the Daily Audio Bible podcast. It rocks! It stirs my spirit. I highly recommend it. I envision my listening to it daily. I am going to forcefully recommend it to the small group this weekend.
