Serenity, based on the sci-fi show
Firefly, has been officially approved for release in 2005 by Universal, written & directed by Joss Whedon, with most of the original cast (so far--rumor expects all to be on board eventually):

The original series' 12 episodes (including 3 that never broadcast in the States) are available on DVD.

Yes, that would be nice, but I think Whedon's heart is really in this movie. In fact, I'm currently reading the latest
Angel episodes (which were spectacular) as an allegory for the loss of one loved life/world and the moving on to another, similar but different one.
Of course, I could be wrong
Oh, sorry--this is getting into TV territory...
SERENITY! Should be fantastic! Right!

Report from DragonCon, Adam Baldwin is quoted as saying:

Because I had planned to show a movie to students in my home, I had projection equipment & a big screen this weekend. The 2-hour Firefly pilot, written & directed by Whedon, looks so movie-style good that I have very high hopes for this movie.

"After Alien: Resurrection I said the next person who ruins one of my scripts is going to be me," he said, with tongue in cheek. "And I think I'm doing a fine job. THE FIRST REVIEW!!
QUOTE
The version of “Serenity” that screened in Chatsworth Tuesday evening isn’t quite the movie we’ll be seeing next fall. The music was temporary and the special effects were only about half-baked, with Adam Baldwin hanging off wires and many spaceships lurching about without texture and detail.
Still, in many ways the film is already a great antidote for those of us so terrifically bored by the “Star Wars” prequels. The lion’s share of my own disappointment with “The Phantom Menace” and “Attack of the Clones” can be traced to an absence of players as compelling and likeable as Han and Leia.

Firefly:
QUOTE
Whedon has created such incredible characters and dialogue in this movie. What has always struck me about most science fiction movies is that no one speaks normally, it’s almost as if space has stifled their sense of normalcy.... Well, as most of you will already know, Whedon can put his characters in the most unimaginable and incredible circumstances and still give them personalities, wit, and true emotion. It doesn’t sound like much, but between the dialogue, the characters, and the visuals (effects were unfinished, but you could tell what will be in store for the final product), I believe that he has really not just elevated the genre, but has transcended it.
The man can write.
Apparently he can also direct.

I guess I'm going to have to hunt down the Firefly DVD because to be honest, that trailer didn't really do much for me. It looks enjoyable, though enjoyable the way Besson's The 5th Element was, and I enjoy Whedon's stuff, for the most part, though he does have a tendency to be too "hip" for his own good.
I'm going to reserve judgement until I see more of the show and movie, but I have to say - as someone willing to become a fan - that nothing I've seen of the show or the trailer makes me think that this is "the next big thing" or revolutionary Sci Fi on any level.

They'll both be there. Both have appeared at promo events like the WizardWorld convention linked previously.
"Revolutionary"? Maybe not, in terms of sci-fi, but in terms of being well-written, character-driven, and not quite like anything else--it's definitely worth taking a look at the series DVDs. Thanks to the astounding stupidity and avarice of network-which-cancelled-it, there are only 13, so the time investment is relatively small!

Took another look at the trailer--larger download on faster connection--and not all the outer space shots seem to have sound, though it does vary, especially for what seem to be battle scenes. I hope this is reflects an attempt to make everything seem more exciting for preview audiences who know nothing about the TV series and have no expectations. But only September will tell, I guess.

about the sound in space issue in the movie.
This is taken from
another board, where someone saw the movie and then asked Joss Whedon a question about the use of sound in space in the movie.
Joss addressed this one some time back. He said as much as he would have wanted no sound at all in space, there is one shot that would have been really distracting for the audiance to be completely sound free. If you want to know it's a space battle between two forces. Includes a lot of ships crashing into each other and a lot of explosions
So to have that on screen you would really be taking folks out of the theater going experience.
But other than that one specific scene. There is no sound in space. True to the show. As for sound in the Atmosphere when they are going to or coming out of a planet. Yes. and that does make some sense. So no sound in space does stand in there and it's understandable why they broke it for that one scene.
I'm so tempted to read those spoilers just because I can't even imagine how "sounds in space" could be a significant plot point. Here's some safe info:
QUOTE
After the screening, one fan asks Buchanan point-blank if he's worried about the previews cannibalizing an audience that now might not turn up in September. His answer is telling:
"We know you guys are gonna go September 30 to see the finished movie," he replies. "[Tonight's preview] was on 20 screens with--what, 250, 300 people per theater? So you're talking about maybe 5,000 people. But on an opening weekend of a movie, you're talking about 3,000 screens. We're not worried."...
There could be another hidden benefit of the September release: By the fall, some key competitors will be lying in their cinematic tombs. As Ain'tItCoolNews.com put it recently, "Most of the major geek franchises are rolling flaming across their finish lines. Star Trek just lolled off the air. Star Wars is migrating to TV. The Wachowskis reduced the Matrix audience to--what?--the Venn-diagram intersection of philosophy undergrads, S&M aficionados, wuxia geeks, and wankers in denial? And the rights to The Hobbitare currently being pried apart by the jackals of finance."
"As Joss has always said, it's about world domination," Buchanan laughs. "You gotta pick your shot. We're like: 'Lucas? Done.'"

BethR

The majority of "all these reviews" are unofficial, fan-generated commentary, from blogs, e-lists, posting boards, etc. But it seems likely that the unusual strategy of the publicized preview screenings is intended to generate some "official" critical attention as well. Evidently Universal marketing the movie this way? So far, responses have been far more positive than negative.
Most newspaper "reviews" I've seen have focused on the history of Firefly and fan response to the screenings. Then again, I'm avoiding specific spoilers as much as possible, so I haven't seen everything.

I've just seen the first three episodes of Firefly and am now one the excited hipsters who are holding their breath for this film. I actually felt a lot cooler after watching. What a great show!
Does the film pick up where the series ends? I only ask because I noticed in the trailer that a certain young girl seems to be at the center of the films plot and she is also at the center of the series plot although each episode has its own adventure. The rest of the series is quietly waiting in my Netflix queue so I understand if this will be clearer upon further viewing.
