I was thinking about this category in relation to my favorite performance of the year - Skinner, in Ratatouille.
Ian Holm's performance is great, it's amazing, I love it -- but it would be apples and oranges to nominate him alone for best actor. Therefore, wouldn't it be great if instead the category could be "best performance", and Holm could be nominated along with the animators to get a joint award for the performance?
I don't know if that seems like too extreme a solution -- for the others movies, I guess, the nomination would have to go to "Plainview, played by Daniel Day Lewis" or even "along with some stunt-men", if we're taking it to it's natural conclusion.
