I've just been asked by a pastor to recommend movies that deal with self-discovery.

He asked me to keep this quote in mind as I consider films to recommend:

QUOTE
"Our wisdom, in so far as it ought to be deemed true and solid wisdom, consists almost entirely of two parts: the knowledge of God and of ourselves. But as these are connected together by many ties, it is not easy to determine which of the two precedes and gives birth to the other." (The opening sentence of John Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion).

Anything come to mind? For some reason, Amazing Grace came immediately to mind, as did Beckett and A Man for All Seasons.
Darrel Manson
I think coming of age stories, like Persepolis, Juno, and myriad others, would fit the bill.

Perhaps Shake Hands with the Devil (the new one).

In the Name of God, if it can be found, may speak to the dangers of not knowing self.

The Great Debaters

Things We Lost in the Fire

The Savages

The Lives of Others
perhaps

Lighter fare: Galaxy Quest.

Ikiru. Definitely Ikiru.

Blade Runner?

What about films made of Philip K Dick stories?

Good suggestions. Wow, this theme could go a lot of different directions depending on your intrepretation of "self-discovery."

How about Amazing Grace?

Practically any rite of passage movie would fit in a "self-discovery" theme (Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club, The Year My Voice Broke, American History X, Dead Poet's Society, etc.) Add to those The Gleaners and I, Sherman's March, and It's Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Booksto name a couple more.
