wow.

i saw it for the first time almost 20 years ago while still in university - i was still a pleasant pothead pagan then - and left the theatre stunned.

saw it again tonight (i think it was the 4th time i've seen it) and again, i was stunned. more than ever i recognized the parallels - they were creatively re-contextualized and the impact of the things jesus said and the things he went through was made palpable. while it is a film that questions the historical record of jesus, the way jesus (or at least the idea of jesus) changes the characters is very interesting to watch. so many layers...and ultimately, it is a movie that affirms the Truth of christ.

Ahem. We also discussed the film a bit in the thread on The Barbarian Invasions (2003), which brings back a few of the characters.
