Saw a trailer for this today. Saw the film at Palm Springs and liked it quite a bit. Epic film that reminds me a bit of Lawrence of Arabia for its scale. It's not so much the rise to power out of adversity, but the way that the adversity formed the man and the lessons that he brought from that adversity. Not often that we think of Genghis Kahn as a hero, but he is here.

While it can certainly be argued that Sergei Bodrov's Mongol has been the victim of a misleading ad campaign that portrays the film as something slightly other than what it is there is certainly no denying that this is one massive, impressive piece of work -- an epic in every sense. Bodrov's film aims to take us through the life of a legend, the legendary emperor Genghis Khan, from the age of nine until the battle that would cement his position in history. But while the trailers and clips released thus far have portrayed the picture as revolving around the Khan's military conquests Bodrov is actually not particularly interested in these matters. Though a number of battle sequences are included Mongol is not much interested in how the great man rose to power, in the battles and tactics, but rather in how he became strong enough to do so.

Reverse Shot is criticizing the movie that the reviewer wanted to see, not the movie he saw. It's not intended as an "adrenaline rush" portrayal of "marauding chaos." It's intended as reflective portrait of man who brought order out of chaos.

And I'm not just guessing at this, though I came to that conclusion before talking with Bodrov myself. My interview with him ran at Past the Popcorn last week, and my review runs this Friday.

This is by no means a great film; but it puts about 75% of American filmmaking to shame.
