Yes, it was he who invented the ratings system not long after that. The older I get, the more amazed I have become that someone in ANY position of power has been able to hold it since before I was born. My lifetime has coincided with the tenures of seven Canadian prime ministers, seven American presidents, and at least three Popes -- but only one head of the Motion Picture Association of America. Heck, he's been in charge since before my parents had even MET each other, or were even living on the same continent. The only other people who have been around as long, that I can think of, are Fidel Castro and Queen Elizabeth II, both of whom go back to the 1950s, I think.

Come to think of it, Jack Valenti's been running the MPAA since around the time the first Star Trek series went on the air -- possibly even a bit before, depending on which month he began his work. (Yes, mike_h, everything comes back to Trek. smile.gif ) Now that's longevity!

OH FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.

Ted Baehr "salutes" Jack Valenti at WorldNetDaily:

"I'd hate to see what happens to you when you face the Judgment of God."

Let's try that again... here is what this cultural crusader had to say, filled with Christ's love all the way...

QUOTE
In his swan song in the commentary section of the Aug. 2 Los Angeles Times, Valenti said that his greatest accomplishment was the movie ratings system. He's right. He helped to destroy an industry, taking it from 44 million weekly attendance to 17 million weekly almost overnight, and he helped to corrupt an entire society and the world. Furthermore, he created an intense antipathy for the United States of America around the world.

If that's what you set out to do, Jack, you did it, but I hate to see what happens when you face the Judgment of God.

Ah, well that would mean taking a swipe first at the Founding Fathers. They being the ones, after all, who set out the guideline by which that whole nasty "American President" business could exist in the first place wink.gif

Valenti's career has certainly been extrodinary. We talk about various film-makers and industry names who really have changed the way the business works but in his case that description is entirely justified. Not always perfect by any means (hopefully last years' Oscar screener debacle, although a complete mess, won't overshadow his achievements in the inevitable career autopsies) but with a lasting legacy of filth and peversity which we can all be thankful for.
