Scholar's Parrot
As the thread says, we've got senior high camp starting next week. We've got 4 morning sessions that we would like to fill with "real world" discussion as sort of a contemplation time, to think over issues. So I need 4 different movies covering real world issues. With good short scenes we can show to high schoolers.

Our first idea was addressing Abortion and teen pregnancy with...wait for it...juno. That's the best example we could come up with, granted we spent a total of 2 seconds on it before we had to move on to decide to other stuff. As I started thinking about possibilities in the 10 minutes I've been home, this is the first place that popped into my head to get some stuff I might not think of.

It'd be great to get your guys' opinions, I think we have about 2 days before we need to have it all worked out. And don't worry, I'm not just throwing this up here and then leaving to come back in 2 days and see what you guys have whipped up. I'll be here to clarify and discuss. Any help is greatly appreciated.

What are the other issues you hope to engage?

I'm not sure what other topics you are trying to cover, but I'll through out a couple of suggestions...

Politics & Media - All the President's Men

Genocide - Hotel Rwanda , Schindler's List

Darrel Manson
The Iraq War: The War Tapes or Body of War (my choice would be Tapes)

Gays and Lesbians: I expect For the Bible Tells Me So is out of the question? How about The Laramie Project?

OK, well I've just talked with the Youth Pastor rather briefly. He wants to tackle issues that high school kids are likely going to encounter. Drug use, teen pregnancy, war in general and split up homes. Things along those lines are great. I was thinking a scene from the Squid and the Whale would be good for split up homes, but I can't remember the movie well enough to pick any out.

Your help so far has been great! thanks a lot!

Bye, Bye, Love is great for split up homes with some, but a minimum of adult language and some adult themes including implied sleeping together. Implied, not observed and not all of it treated positively by the film. Treats it with quite a sense of humor and some pathos.

For war ingeneral, it is hard to find nuance, particularly ideological nuance. Patton, We Were Soldiers, Saving Private Ryan come to mind as at least complicated and therefore more thought provoking in themselves, rather than by having to point out obvious political slant.

Crimes and Misdemeanors by Woody Allen is still a classic for moral complexity, moral heartbreak, and rationalising compromise. Not specific to your topics, but it is chock full of discussable moral issues.

Thanks a ton for these, I'll pass them on!

Actually, I read it. I just finished my 4th semester of Classical Greek at University of Kansas (NATIONAL CHAMPS). They don't offer biblical here, or I would have taken it. BUT, it did allow me to take a semester of Homeric greek with a guy that actually has published translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey, which was a great opportunity.

Oo, how about the final scene of Secrets and Lies to talk about family issues, honesty, forgiveness, etc.
