numbers like these, how can I doubt the capacity of Americans to vote for a proper president?
Especially when the multiplex gives people more than two choices.
Incidentally, I appreciate the reference to "America" here, rather than "North America". Despite the IMDb's reference to "USA Box Office Estimates," the figures it reports are actually based on the "North American" totals, which is to say the combined totals for Canada and the United States. But it turns out that
Beverly Hills Chihuahua, despite earning $29.3 million across the continent last week and therefore doing much better than
Eagle Eye's $17.7 million, actually came in SECOND in Canada last week, earning $1.37 million and thereby coming in second to
Eagle Eye's $1.61 million. Is it because we don't have as big of a Latino population? Is it because talking-animal kids' movies generally don't do that well up here? Is it because we prefer movies which imagine that the United States is being run by a giant murderous computer that got a wee bit out of control while it was in "beta-testing"? Who knows. (FWIW, the Canadian figures for THIS week are not in yet, because today is our Thanksgiving -- so I don't know yet which of those films did better this week.)
