Full Version: I Need Help Remembering a Film

This past weekend, I was in a very seafaring mood after taking a tour of the U.S.S. Constitution in Charlestown, just north of Boston. Afterwards, I began thinking of seafaring movies that I would like to watch. The usual titles came to mind: Master and Commander, the first two Pirates of the Caribbean movies, etc.

Than, I remembered an older movie that I watched with my grandfather when I was about 7 or 8. My memory of it is extremely slight, but I remember thinking it was hilarious and very enjoyable.

It was an adventure movie of sorts, and some characters were pirates or at least sailors. I only remember a few details though. They are:

1- There was an old man in a submarine who appears at the end, despite the movie being set in presumably the 18th century.

2- There was a hot air balloon.

3- You know that trick that Jack Sparrow and Will Turner use in CotBP, where they walk on the ocean floor with a rowboat over there heads, with air trapped inside, so that they can breath? This old movie had the same trick, and when I first saw CotBP, it jogged my memory.

4- It seemed to be a swashbuckler of sorts, with colorful set design and period dress.

That's all I can recall. I know these are vague and relatively unhelpful clues, but if it jogs anyone's memory...you could very well help me relive long lost childhood happiness if you point me to this movie, whatever it is. smile.gif

I've never seen a movie of it, but your description reminds me of Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island, especially the setting and the submarine and the hot air balloon. I was a big fan of the Classics Illustrated comic book. BTW, this is a sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and the submarine belongs to Nemo.

Maybe it was this version starring Omar Sharif?

That definitely sounds like the 1961 adaptation of The Mysterious Island, with Herbert Lom as Captain Nemo. Do you remember if there was a confrontation with a giant Ray Harryhausen animated crab?

Thanks, guys. I think we are getting warmer. I am going to continue the hunt!

Definitely sounds like Mysterious Island! Do you remember giant chickens?
