Full Version: New Roy Orbison Album

Okay, not really, Sadly, Roy is dead, and the vaults have already been thoroughly plundered.

But Raul Malo, late of The Mavericks, is a pretty good substitute. His new album, Lucky One, out in early March, features the kind of heavily orchestrated, schmaltz-laden operettas that Roy churned out throughout the late fifties and early sixties. The lyrics are strictly paint-by-cliche ("Time will tell me if I'm wrong or right/I just wanna be with you tonight"). But that pure, soaring tenor makes it all more than palatable. For a lesson in great singing, circa 1962 and 2009, you could do far worse.

I've never heard any Mavericks or Raul Malo records, but know how the guy sings, since I remember the opener of a Stephen Foster tribute a few years ago. I thought that's how they probably used to sing in the 19th century theaters - too.
