one of my personal interests is the depiction of artistic characters in film -- i wonder if the knowledgable folks here at a&f could suggest films that specifically explore the realm of writers or that reference writing as a core component of the film. films like finding forrester, say, or adaptation, or even sex with lucia. and maybe films that reference books or the act/ process of writing (by which i don't mean adaptations - though tristram shandy: a cock & bull story is brill) such as atonement, or the jane austen book club, or prospero's books (though i suppose the majority of greenaway's movies are about books, or 'texts', anyway).
please.

Misery, perhaps?

Possession (though the book is better at this than the movie)
Stranger than Fiction
Lady in the Water
Fahrenheit 451
What about movies that are fictionalized stories about real authors, such as Miss Austen Regrets or Becoming Jane, My Left Foot (Christy Brown), Shadowlands (C.S. Lewis), Capote, An Angel at My Table (Janet Frame), Miss Potter (Beatrix Potter), etc.--there's a boatload.

Barton Fink
it's a stretch, but there's a neat little subplot about a failed poet in the Val Lewton-produced thriller The Seventh Victim
and isn't the Stephen King adaptation Secret Window about a writer?

possession is one of my mostest favouritest books
ever (which is why i will probably never see the movie).
i'm still trying to recover from the disappointment that was
the name of the rose...

I'll second BethR's mention of An Angel at My Table (1990) dir by Jane Campion on the writer and poet Janet Frame ...its out on criterion dvd and accurately nails down the solitary aspects of the craft. Her life story is inspiring.
The Whole Wide World (1996) is very good with Vincent D'Onofrio as Robort Howard the creator of Conan....
Henry and June(1990) on the relationship of Henry Miller and Anis Nin, both writers in Paris in the 1930's.
Il Postino - the poet Pablo Neruda, hands down the best date movie of all recommended.
oh ill add Beautiful Dreamers (1990) Rip Torn as Walt Whitman is steller

And many other Stephen King adaptations: The Shining, Stand By Me, Secret Window, etc. King seems to write about himself a lot.
Woody Allen's characters are often writing, though not necessarily novels: plays and films also come to mind (Annie Hall, Celebrity, etc.).
