I am curious what people might "double dip" for. Double dip, of course, came into prominence in the 90's when studios started to re-release DVDs that were previously available. In some cases, it made sense. Disney initially released many of their movies on DVD, but then went back to the "vault system." But many studios were releasing a quick bare bones disc in the early days, and a few years later released a special edition set. Again, that makes some sense. But then you had movies getting a 25th anniversary special edition, followed by a 30th Anniversary set with one or two special features. Or a directors cut and a theatrical cut that had been released separately were packaged together as a special two disc edition. Or a two disc set being split up and sold separately. The reasons eventually became as absurd as "The sequel is coming, buy the movie again!" or "This actor has a new hit!"

But now, with Blu-Ray, we have a new format. And it is more than a slight improvement. What are movies you would consider replacing in your collection with a Blu-Ray edition?

For me, off the top of my head?

the LotR series
The Indiana Jones films
Star Wars Ep 4-6
Toy Story 1 & 2
the Incredibles
Finding Nemo
Monsters Inc. (possibly)

And some movies have been released TWICE on Blu-Ray already! (E.g., Full Metal Jacket, Casino Royale.) So "double-dipping on Blu-Ray" COULD mean buying the movie on Blu-Ray twice!

Movies I have already re-bought on Blu-Ray:
  • Dark City (1998)
  • Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979)
  • Sleeping Beauty (1959)
In all three cases, there were brand new bonus features that the earlier DVDs didn't have -- a whole new "director's cut" of Dark City, for example -- and in the case of Sleeping Beauty, the new version also includes a fair bit more of the original image than the badly-cropped earlier DVD did.

The only other movie I have re-acquired on Blu-Ray is Superman: The Movie (1978), but that was one of four or five freebies that I got with my new player. Every other Blu-Ray in my collection, so far, is a brand-new addition to my collection.

I am strongly, strongly tempted to get the Blu-Ray of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), since it's such a visually brilliant film, and the Blu-Ray has quite a few bonus features, and my existing DVD is the bare-bones edition that came out seven years ago, and the Blu-Ray is currently selling for only CDN$17 in some places.

I forgot to mention the two that hit Blu twice (thankfully, it has not become a trend)

I know at Target 2001 (and the other Kubricks erleased at the same time) are on sale a lot $14.99 USD in Blu-Ray.

So far, I'm a non-Blu-ray owner. I intend to upgrade, but I'm waiting for Godfrey Reggio's Qatsi films to be released before even buying a Blu-Ray. Until then, I usually by used DVD's now, which will lessen the struggle to double dip some films that i already own.
