I was about to add the major film festivals to our calendar, but then I realizied I didn't know what they are!
Other than Sundance, Cannes, and (for us) Flickerings and the City of Angels FF, what 10-12 festivals would you list?
This site lists
- Berlin
- Newport Beach
- San Francisco
- Cannes (of course)
- Kansas City (really?)
- Festival des 3 continents
- Paris
- Venice
- Karlovy Vary (!)
- New York
But
this site lists
- Chicago
- Los Angeles
- Mill Valley International Film Festival
- Seattle
- Telluride
- Toronto
- Welsh International Film Festival
- Brussels Cartton and Animated Film Festival
- Cambridge Film Festival
- Deauville Film Festival
- Edinburgh Film Festival
- Prague International Film Festival
- San Sebastian Film Festival (Spain)
- Jerusalem Film Festival
- Sydney Film Festival
- Tokyo Film Festival
- and some of those in the first list...

Hey, we all know FilmFest DC isn’t a top-tier fest, but since it starts Wednesday, and I’m attending this year, why not add it? It is in the nation’s capital, after all.
Virginia has a film festival, too, in Charlottesville, but it’s been a bit of an underachiever. I haven’t heard of its status the past couple of years, (Prins, do you know?), but now that Charlottesville has been named the top place to live in the U.S., maybe that film fest will find firmer footing.

You can
add it to the calendar yourself, too, so feel free to do that.
I (personally) was just focusing on the top ones, but feel free to add any relevant events.

I'm impressed that Newport Beach is on one of the lists. Also mourning that I just plain can't fit it in since it's currently running.
What about Montreal?

Messing with Christian's order:
: I haven’t heard of [the Virginia International Film Festival's] status the past
: couple of years, (Prins, do you know?)...
The status is the status quo: It's around, and it hasn't changed much -- at all, really -- in the five years I've be attending.
: Virginia has a film festival, too, in Charlottesville, but it’s been a bit of an
: underachiever.
The VIFF isn't so much an underachiever as it is differently focused. Unlike nearly every major film festival in the world, VIFF has no predilection in favor of brand-spankin'-new films; rather, it chooses a topic (last year: money) and picks films to screen based on their relevance to that theme, regardless of whether the film is from this '04 or last '04. It's largely a successful model, but I wouldn't want it to be the only film festival I attend all year.

Hey, the Vancouver International Film Festival is very proud of what it has achieved in the last few years.
Oops. Different VIFF.

What about starting a separate thread for underground and online film festivals?
This could be a helpful index as well as interesting. Before beginning another thread I just thought I would get a little feedback.

It's OK with me if it is posted here, but feel free to start a separate topic if you wish.

"The One That Doug Cummings is Involved With" - City of Angels or something like that.
And also

- TCM - Classic Shorts Festival
- Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival
- Full Frame Documentary Film Festival
- Movieguide International Film Extravaganza
- The Donald Trump Amazingly Superior International Film Festival Regalia

What kind of panache goes with the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes? The film I saw last night (Caramel) was there this year.
