It has come to my attention that several people have picked up copies of Bazin's criticism to prepare for the seminar, but I should warn you that it may not prove to be so helpful. By all means, read his criticism, but note that the seminar is entitled Bazin's cinephilia...I plan to focus more on his personal life, community builidng, and interaction with the culture of his day (which, of course, reveals issues that are still relevant today). I will touch on his criticism, because it was important and I want to incorporate clips somehow, but I'll definitely be talking more about the man than the critic. Just so you know...

Good! I can only take so much criticism at a time. Unless it's constructive, i mean.

Well the world has far too many critics and not nearly enough cinephiles if you ask me.

Actually Doug
I want to get started on Bazin, but obviously can't make it. What's the best place to start?

I find a lot of inspiration in his life itself, in which case I'd recommend Dudley Andrews' biography. But certainly his What Is Cinema? series (translated into English as a 2-volume set) is classic film writing.

Dr. Vanhoozer has a trademark lecture on something along these lines. He takes the word "amateur" and shows you how English has laid negative connotations over the word. It means to us "non-professional" at best and "mediocre" at worst.
In reality the semantic domain of the word actually has to do with activities that we engage in for no other reason than that we love to do them. He moves on to talk about how the church needs more amateur theologians in this sense. The first time I heard this lecture I kept thinking: Hmm... that's Bazin, hey...that's Bazin too.

I love it, (M). Yeah, there's a sense of two different projects: 1) offering opinions about movies, or 2) introducing people to, and participating in, the culture of movies (and by extention, the world at large). I guess it goes back to Stef's comments about recognizing the responsibilities of "gate keeping."
