Thanks to the glory that is Netflix, my wife and I enjoyed this bit of fluff last night. There's nothing profound about it, but it's a charming bit of entertainment after a full day.
Based on a mid-19th century romance entitled 'The Hunchback' (no, not that hunchback), it tells the story of a sword-for-hire who rescues a royal infant girl from a scheming duke, after the child's mother and father are slain. He swears to restore her to her royal position, and the film (and I assume, novel) tell this story.
As a French film from the mid-90's, I don't recognize most of the cast, with the exception of the splendid Daniel Auteuil (in the lead role) and Vincent Perez (who was Christian in 'Cyrano de Bergerac').
For those who enjoyed the 1990's version of 'Cyrano,' this is very much a film in the same vein: beautifully filmed, with good measures of adventure, humor, and old-style romance. (I'd recommend screening it before showing it to the wee ones, however, as it does have a couple moments of 'skin'-- although not in a graphic sexual manner -- and some tense, violent moments.)
