Please note IMDB lists 33 versions of R&J. I'll just list a few here. In particular I have eliminated the numerous major silent adaptations. For one, I cannot comprehend watching a silent Shakesperean film. I've also skipped the foreign, filmed-play, and ballet adaptations. Finally, I figured most folks haven't seen
George Cukor's 1936 version, and I omitted it.

Is the actress that played Juliet in Zeffirelli's version the same one who played Mary in "Jesus of Nazareth"?
I remember watching R&J in junior high, for 9th grade English class. For the most part I basically paid no attention to it, though I do remember a few scenes. I liked it okay, but I'd have to watch it again to get an adult's perspective on it.

Yes,
Olivia Hussey. Apparently, she's been doing lots of voice-overs lately, including a few for Lucasfilm. Her bio at IMDB is fairly impressive.
I always thought she was Italian, but she isn't -- she's Argentinian and English (and has performed in Spanish-language productions). She recently played Mother Theresa.

I prefer Zef's.
I love Baz, but I hated, hated Leo and Clare. Half of their dialogue was utterly lost in a sea of emoting. Despite Danes' talent, she didn't understand the text. My favorites were Tybalt and Lady Capulet.
Overall, I admired the integroty of Baz' vision, and the sound design was great...but overall, Zef's version was and still is the best I've seen.

I propose another smackdown, this time between Olivia Hussey, Geraldine Chaplin, and anyone else who has ever played Mother Theresa. (Wasn't there a Mother Theresa impersonator in one of the Naked Gun movies?)
