sure we cry at lots of films, even guys are "sensitive" these days. But what will you admit to being so scared of that you won't watch alone or in the dark?
For me, Wait Until Dark. Even after I've seen it a few times, I won't watch it by myself. I tried once, got in about 15 minutes and thought, I can't do this to myself.

Just saw it for the first time last week. Terrific little film. My wife and I both jumped off the couch You Know When.

I don't think I have EVER been more freaked out by a movie than one night in Philadelphia alone in our apartment watching a local broadcast of
Carnival of Souls.

Yeah, I love Wait until Dark. I remember watching it as a wee lad for the first time one Christmas Eve; a very intense experience.
I can't think offhand of many films that would scare me enough to have to have the lights on, although I can picture myself leaping up frantically over some imagined spider while watching Arachnophobia. Eek.

I watched The Ring (Japanese version) recently and had to watch the last half hour of the film with the light on.
A friend and I went to see Jeepers Creepers at the cinema, which scared her so much she spent the first half of the film underneath her coat and then had to leave. Even today, you only need to start humming the tune to freak her out.
I saw far too many horrible films when I was young - The Fly, The Omen, Aliens, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Poltergeist, all of which (and more) scared me witless.

I freely admit that I'm the world's biggest wuss. I was dragged to see Aliens and had nightmares for--at least two nights. I still have never sat through the entire, original Psycho, even though I know perfectly well what's going to happen, to whom, when, where, how, and why. I've been forced to watch Carrie on TV, and I hated every minute--especially the last minute. I've never seen The Exorcist and don't plan to. Name most more recent scary movies--I've never seen them.
I don't like being scared just to be scared.
For some reason, M.Night Shyamalan's movies don't scare me in this unpleasant way. Sixth Sense & Signs made me jump here & there, but I was really more interested in the characters--I think that may be the difference.
Also, extremely violent films--I'll probably skip them. E.g.--Kill Bill 1&2. Some that I have seen, I regretted.

One of the interesting things about D is that she will watch scary movies at home, on video, but not in a theatre. She also likes violent movies too, though (in our very-first-ever phone conversation, we discovered that we both liked Robocop, and we have fun chats about Tarantino, too), so this sometimes leads to dilemmas like, "Will Alien Vs. Predator be more of a scary movie, or more of a violent movie?" The PG-13 rating didn't really answer this question, since scary movies like The Ring have been PG-13.

Ah, Poltergeist.
That clown doll freaks me out every time.

Fire Walk With Me or any Twin Peaks episode with Bob in it. He scares the pee outta me.

Isn't "Croaker" one of the characters in Wait until Dark?

The original Night of the Living Dead still puts the creeps in me, no matter if I'm alone or not, or watching it in the dark or not. Somehow, I forget I'm watching a movie, and am instead watching a documentary, or something that is occuring as I'm watching. I've actually had to look out the window a couple of times just to make sure nothing is lingering out there. I don't know if it's the grainy B&W photography, or the conviction in the admittedly sub-par acting, but this film always manages to work it's way under my skin. I guess Leonard Maltin summed it up best when he writes, "the shoestring production values merely add to the authentic feel. Don't watch this alone!"

Haven't seen the Japanese version, but the American version scared me silly. I saw it at a theater while I was on a business trip, alone. Upon returning to my hotel room, I had to turn the huge TV set at the foot of the bed to face the door, so it wasn't "looking" directly at me.
I'll also second
Carrie (still can't think about the scene where Carrie shoots the knives at her mother without a chill, and the hand reaching up from the grave),
Psycho (still scary after all these years) and
Blair Witch (even though many found nothing to be afraid of, I am terrified of getting lost in the woods, hearing strange noises while camping ...
shudder ... and that final shot of the guy standing in the corner ....

)
The original
Night of the Living Dead is another one. Something about black and white films of that era are deeply disturbing.
Clouzeau's original
Diabolique also gives me the creeps. The first time I watched it I was alone, and it was late in the afternoon, just around the time the sun was setting. So the climactic bathtub scene came on just about when the house was completely dark. I had to put the lights on as the wife made her way to the bathroom, because I was getting seriously creeped.

I don't know Alvy. I have never seen that movie. I actually stole the name from a series of books written by Glen Cook called the Chronicles of the Black Company. It's a fantasy novel about a band of mercenaries, and the story is told by the resident field medic who's nickname is Croaker. He also doubles as the keeper of the Company's Annals. It's a very cool series if your into that sort of thing.

I checked it out. It was "Roat". Phonetically similar.

A friend of mine went to see Blair Witch with his housemate, and in the middle of the following night he made one of those weird twig things (very accurately) and hung it outside his housemates door. Nasty.
The most scared I have ever been in a film was in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the bit with the Child Catcher. I think it's a horrible idea to put in a kids film, and I reckon it would still creep me out if I saw it now.

I still can't see Alien without a light on. That movie creeps me out, even after 5-6 viewings.
