Wow! Looks like the DVD will be out in November! I'll be able to use this film in my class!

So which of the 4 versions are you getting?

Oh, here's something fun - there might be a Spider-Man 2.5 out next year. Have fun!

From the article:

A wide-screen version also will be available on DVD.

Like... um... "for those who might be interested?"

Aren't we PAST that by now?

Wouldn't it make more sense to point out "A full-screen version also will be available on DVD"?

Can you imagine the uproar if a widescreen version was NOT available on DVD?

Sadly, many full screen releases are still outselling their widescreen counterparts.

So what's everyones' take on this new(ish) trend of releasing a DVD but, at the same press conference, announcing a forthcoming ultimate edition? In the past, what's tended to happen is that the first one would come out and then there would be a second appearence by surprise (and coupled with a lot of anger) Now, since Lord of the Rings it's become common-place to make future plans known whilst still giving folks the option to own the movie early. Personally, I quite like it and it defeats that old standby "why didn't they tell us they were releasing another version?" The only proviso being that it means, implicitly, that the first version to be released won't receive nearly so much attention from the film-makers.

Only at Wal-Mart.

In all seriousness, widescreen outsells foolscreen most of the time. I'm still trying to find charts where this is confirmed, but I know I've seen the stats before on the web...

Columbia/Sony, at least in the past, are the worst at this. They put out an unannounced Underworld set, and a lot of fans of the movie were rather put off by it. Warner Bros. is starting to make SE's after/while releasing a movie-only edition (I get why people would buy a deluxe edition of Mystic River; do we need a 2-disc set of Gothika?)

Sorry, Shantih, but Clint is right. Widescreen outsells "Full"-screen consistently across all genres, including children's videos. You can browse through these sales charts here if you're interested, but I think you'll find that a Pan-and-Scan outselling the Widescreen is a rarity rather than the exception.

Also, we had a discussion about it on the board, with a link to this article about the Widescreen victory.

That said, I have no doubt that Spider-man 2 will sell more Widescreen. Personally, I can't wait to get it.

Well, that's very good news! And certainly a big change from, like, only a year or so ago. Which does make the original question all the more pertinent: why are there still so many full screen releases in the US? Even if they're not outselling widescreen, does that mean they're still selling *enough* to still warrant their existance?

Yep. Wal-Mart is the worse in this respect. Many of their employees often push Full-Screen releases because "the picture fills up your TV screen, unlike those black bars on the widescreen releases." The frustrating part of this senario is that 1/3 of all DVD sales in the US come from... Wal-Mart. pinch.gif Heck, on their displays of widescreen HDTV sets, they use a full-screen disc and stretch the image to fit that screen.

I solved the issue by refusing to buy any DVD's from there. (Well, there's the occasional 5.50 disc - but two Buster Keaton films for that price is great!)

IGN has a review of the "2.1" cut. Sounds like more of the new footage is about character development rather than action.
