Full Version: Films for the Seven Heavenly Virtues

I stumbled across a few, um, poor attempts to name seven films that capture:
  • faith (thesaurus: trust, confidence, reliance)
  • hope (thesaurus: expect, count upon, look to)
  • charity (love) (thesaurus: mercy, clemency, grace)
  • fortitude (thesaurus: courage, grit, nerve)
  • justice (thesaurus: equity, fairness)
  • temperance (thesaurus: moderation, restraint)
  • prudence (thesaurus: caution, discretion, shrewdness)
What would you pick for each of these? I'm working on my list. Here is a site that discusses the seven...

Divides many but I think Signs does a great job in exploring the need for faith. As does Contact.

Has plenty of faults but The Wicker Man certainly has a great display of fortitude.

And for justice, how about Insomnia?

That'll do for a start!

*giggles*

Whereas I thought Contact did a great job in exploring the need for acceptance of other's beliefs whilst also highlighting that lack of faith is an equally valid belief system.

But, as a non-believer, I would, right? Ooh... divisions appearing already wink.gif

If we are speaking of faith rightly so called, as one of the three theological virtues, it is a gift of God that necessarily has God and divine revelation as its object. Non-religious belief, and even belief in other religions, is not properly faith at all.

A few off the top of my morning head:
Hope - Shawshank Redemption
Fortitude - Matewan; The Winslow Boy
Temperance - Tender Mercies
Justice - Do the Right Thing; Lone Star; Philadelphia; The Winslow Boy
Faith - The Fisher King; Field of Dreams; Places in the Heart; Memento; Miracle on 34th St.

for an interesting overview of the historical development of the concept of "faith" (and hope and charity) and the distinction in "faith" between the different Christian denominations.
