Final instalment of Dogville trilogy years away: Lars von Trier
"I am in the process of editing Manderley at Zentropa studios, and all is going well. But it will be several years before we shoot the final part of the trilogy, because in the meantime I need to earn some money," Von Trier told AFP. . . . Zentropa's chief Peter Aalbaek Jensen said Von Trier is is "preparing a new film for a wider audience, a horror film not with vampires but more in the style of The Kingdom," the Danish filmmaker's 1994 film. "I don't want to say any more. It is kind of an Antichrist with international distribution, based on the theory that it was not God but Satan who created the world," said the producer and longtime Von Trier collaborator.

Whoo! I've been wishing Von Trier would finish up the Kingdom for ages. It's all wishful thinking, of course, since seemingly half the cast died after shooting the second installment, but it's great news he's doing something along that line. If you haven't seen Von Trier's Kingdom it's totally worth tracking down ... the King remake was an absolute travesty.

I wish someone would sit down with Von Trier and talk directly about his religious beliefs ... there's something going on there ...

I might actually be the closest IN-GUY at this point. Or maybe not.

Zentropa sent a small crew to CIFF this year to host and take Q&A from the audience for Simon Staho's Day and Night, one of the greatest most depressing films you will ever see in your life, and certainly one of my favorites at the Festival. At the screening I was able to meet a young Danish lady who works directly for Von Trier in post-production. (I'm still trying to figure out exactly what that means and exactly what she does.) But hey, she works for THE MAN. How cool is that? When I realized who she worked for, every butterfly I never experienced in all my years of public appearance suddenly flooded my being, and I failed to come up with any decent questions other than "How's Bryce doing in Manderlay?" and an assortment of odd "Praise-You" fixation phrases. If there were ever a moment in time I wish to live again, well, that might be in the Top 5. I'd like a little more preparation to actually think through what I'd really like to say to such a person.

Oh. And I forgot her name, too. Like i said above -- "Or maybe not."

Does anyone know why this is called Manderley? Is there any link with Hitchcock's Rebecca

I think that I read somewhere that he's Catholic-I wish I could remember where... blushing.gif

(Well I've just done a search and he does make mention of his Catholic faith in several articles on the web.Haven't found anything at all lengthy yet,though...)

Antichrist to shoot next year with a brand-new script.

Lars Von Trier is adding a very "William Castle-esque" contest to his latest film, and the winner of this contest gets a part in Antichrist.

Story here.

Depression Lays Danish Director Low
The Danish director Lars Von Trier said a period of depression has left him unable to work and he has doubts about when he will return to filmmaking. In an interview published Saturday in the Politiken newspaper, Von Trier said the aftermath of his depression has left him "like a blank sheet of paper." "It's very strange for me, because I've always had at least three projects in my head at one time," he said. . . . Von Trier said he is unsure whether he will be able to begin work on a horror movie called "Antichrist" that he planned to start filming toward the middle of this year. The movie depicts Satan, rather than God, as the world's creator. "I assume that 'Antichrist' will be my next movie. But right now I don't know," he said.

Sounds like he's making another gnosticism inspired religious movie, to go along with The Da Vinci Code. Along with The Golden Compass, it's a great year for cinema about the Devil pretending to be the Creator.

I will be praying for you, Lars. For you, even above your creativity, however, we do hope that you beat this thing and get back to making amazing films that challenge us at the deepest levels.

Lars Von Trier's funny turn
Instead, his next feature is Antichrist, a "psychological thriller that evolves into a horror film". It features one man and one woman, yet to be cast, will be shot in Germany and in English this summer and deals with the favourite Von Trier topic of cruelty between the sexes: "You have to guess who is the Antichrist," says its producer, Meta Louise Foldager, mischievously. Von Trier is testing ways of manipulating the image in it.

So it sounds like Lars has made a full recovery.

One afternoon, everyone waited around for three hours, because the program kept pointing the camera at a blank wall.

This was hysterical. From reading this article I am more interested in the "making of" documentary than the actual film. I did appreciate the way his camera tricks actually contributed to the plot of Dogville, but automavision sounds very distracting.
