Full Version: TV Recommendations?

For the past few months, I've been doing some casual research into getting a new TV. Currently, I've got a 27" Samsung, which I've had for the past 5-6 years. There's nothing wrong with it, aside from an occasional yellow tint in one corner on heavily white scenes. However, I'd like start upgrading my home theatre system, such as it is, into something a bit more "professional" and less "poor college student".

Ideally, I'd like to get something at least 30", flat-screen (not plasma screen, but flat CRT), and HD-compatible. Also, wide-screen would be nice, but not mandatory. I've looked at a couple of Sony models, such as the KV-32HS420. However, I've also found a nice-looking Samsung set, the TX-P3071WH.

However, does anyone have any recommendations? Is there something I'm overlooking?

I've always bought Sony, and always come away really pleased.

FYI, Consumer Reports' top recommendation in 30"-36" conventional flat-screen TVs is the Sony FD Trinitron Wega Hi-Scan KV-32HS420, around $1000--your choice.

in 30" wide-screen CRTs, their choice is Sony FD Trinitron Wega Hi-Scan KV-30HS420, also around $1000

Samsung was not listed.

blink.gif Wow, I must have the same 27" Samsung TV (around 4 years old) because it's been doing that yellow tint thing in the corner also - especially during B&W movies this can be annoying. It's good to know that it isn't just that my TV isn't a reject. Perhaps something wrong with the model?

Unfortunately, I'm no position to be upgrading my TV as I am still a "poor college student."

If you have the room for it, I'd recommend shopping ebay for a used video projector. You can get a nice one and build a 6ft.+ screen for well under the price of any of those Sony models...

Perhaps... I didn't really notice it until I'd already had the set for several years. I first noticed it while watching Pi, which is all high contrast B&W. It's not enough to be too annoying on my TV, but it is noticeable from time to time.

My old roommate and I thought about doing that at our old place. It had a huge living room with blank, white walls, which would've been perfect for a projector. Unfortunately, my new residence doesn't really have any rooms that would lend themselves well to a projector set-up (I think).

(On a side note, I just used that multiple quote/reply feature for this post, and it's quite handy. Great work on the upgrade, Alan!)
