    Ready Player One

I thought Ready Player One was a fairly entertaining novel, mainly as a nostalgia trip, but I never imagined Steven Spielberg directing it. The novel also appropriates a bunch of 70s and 80s video games, and I wonder if they'll get the rights to all of them for the movie. Robert Zemeckis and Christopher Nolan had also been rumored directors.

    The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara

Steven Spielberg Boards Religious Drama ‘Edgardo Mortara’ (Exclusive) Though he’s still mulling what his next directing gig will be, Steven Spielberg has added another project to his development slate: a religious drama titled “The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara,” written by “Lincoln” and “Munich” scribe Tony Kushner. Spielberg plans to produce the drama as a potential directing vehicle, which would be a co-production between DreamWorks and the Weinstein Co. The pic is based on the David Kertzer non-fiction book revolving around the true life story of an Italian Jew who in 1858 became the center of an international controversy when he was removed from his parents at the age of seven by authorities of the Papal States and raised as a Catholic. He went on to become a priest in the Augustinian order. . . . Variety, April 17

    Extant

CBS is going back to the summer programming/sci-fi/Spielberg well again (after Under the Dome) with Extant. New writer Mickey Fisher will do the script. An earlier report from The Wrap says he was shopping the story as a movie before the CBS deal came together. It also includes a more detailed summary:

    Stanley Kubrick's Napoleon

Via Indiewire: "I've been developing Stanley Kubrick's screenplay -- for a miniseries not for a motion picture -- about the life of Napoleon. Kubrick wrote the script in 1961, a long time ago," Spielberg told French network Canal+.
