01/04 - Once, DVD 4.5/5 - Just as good the second time around, and I'm glad I got to share the experience with friends. I think -- having seen it again -- that I was able to pick up on a lot more. It went from being "pleasant film with great music" to "pleasant and substantial film with great music."

01/09 - Juno, theater 4.0/5 - I did not love it, but I really liked it. Juno's character was a lot more complex than the "clever concentrate" that I assumed she would be going in, and I like how they handled a lot of things. I think I ODed on my yearly intake of twee pop, though.

01/10 - No Country For Old Men, theater 4.5/5 - Fantastic, and it's earned the acclaim it has. I still don't think it's the Coens' masterpiece, but it's top tier material. As a McCarthy fan, I thought it did the book well, but a few things they left out would've made it 5-star material.

01/14 - Cloverfield, theater 3.5/5 - Well-made, well-executed. I sort of agree that it was as much love story as it was monster film. Lofty ambitions? Not sure, don't care too much. I appreciated it, but didn't feel like it was a 'great' film by any means.

01/26 - Psycho (1960), DVD (repeat viewing) 5.0/5 - Hitchcock films, especially the well-made ones, never get old. It's been a few years since I've seen Psycho, but it holds up better than I remember (I would've given it a star or star-and-a-half less then). I have the story memorized and it is still holds buckets of tension.

01/29 - Von Ryan's Express, DVD 4.0/5 - I thought this was a three-star film when the credits came up at the end, but a week's worth of reflection made me appreciate it a lot. As far as WWII films go, this falls on the 'entertainment' side of the spectrum (as opposed to 'history!'), but it's pretty solid. Frank Sinatra does a great job as the downed airman, and the supporting cast -- especially the always-riveting Trevor Howard -- rip through the fairly simple plot. There's some great suspense in this, and I was glad to see a sympathetic Italian character that wasn't a buffoon.

February

02/08 - V For Vendetta, DVD 3.5/5 - I appreciate the graphic novel more. But I really thought the movie wasn't terrible. Not great, mind you -- especially the very Matrix-y fight scene at the end -- but I liked it overall.

02/09 - There Will Be Blood, theater 5.0/5 - LOVED IT. See my comments in the thread for more.

1/1 - Dragon Tiger Date - Latest from the team behind Sha Po Lang, one of the best action films to come out of Hong Kong in a long time. This one is considerably cheesier and sillier; the film tries to ratchet up the angst and whatnot, but it just doesn't work. Donnie Yen's choreography is still pretty sweet to watch, though. 2.5/5

1/1 - Stardust - What a wretched adaptation. It's almost as if the filmmakers did their best to get rid of every bit of wit, cleverness, subtlety, and mystery in the original novel just so that they could have a big, bad-ass Hollywood fantasy movie. 1.0/5

1/4 - Juno - At times a little too clever, precocious, witty, and "too cool for school" for it's own good. But at other times, incredibly affecting and heartwarming. 3.5/5

1/5 - Helvetica - At only 80 minutes, it gets a little scant at times, but the design geek in me still found it pretty fascinating. 4.0/5

+ theatrical viewings

* repeat viewings

December

Outsourced (pleasant cross-cultural, social-commentary comedy)

+ Valkyrie (much better than expected)

* The Nun's Story (I admit I only rented it for the scenes in the Congo, but the whole thing is pretty good)

Sahara (ridiculous, but plenty of action)

+* Slumdog Millionaire (just as good on 2nd viewing)

+ Bolt

Superman Returns (2006--better than expected--guess I should have seen it on the big screen!)

+ Slumdog Millionaire 4.0/5

Paheli

+ Happy-Go-Lucky

November

+ Australia (now that's a movie)

The Great Debaters

Leatherheads (should have been funnier; must have been the football...)

+ Twilight (palest girl in the world wants to be a vampire=metaphor for ETERNAL TWU LURVE)

Hellboy II: The Golden Army

* The Reckoning

* The Fisher King

October

The Incredible Hulk (starring Edward Norton)

+ Appaloosa (have decided R.B. Parker doesn't really like women much)

The Visitor (perfect portrait of ennui, without being ennuyant)

Iron Man (more heart than The Dark Knight)

The More the Merrier

The Boys of Baraka

September

The Greatest Game Ever Played (as is often the case, one of the world's most boring sports, golf, makes a decent movie)

*+ Trois Couleurs: Bleu (well worth seeing again in any case, but the big screen made it even better)

Smart People (I know I'm not the first to note that this movie is really not particularly smart)

Son of Rambow

August

* Born into Brothels (on IFC)

+ Mamma Mia! (please, never allow Pierce Brosnan to sing again)

La Vie en Rose

July

Marigold (OK, but as Bollywood crossovers go, I prefer Bride and Prejudice)

+ The X Files: I Want to Believe (I'm probably the only person in America who preferred it to TDK)

+ The Dark Knight (whoa--that really was dark)

27 Dresses (awful dresses pretty much the only reason for this one)

A Good Woman (would not have thought it possible to make Oscar Wilde boring)

* I Know Where I'm Going (still charming, and visually striking)

+ Wall-E

+ Journey to the Center of the Earth

The Glass Slipper (TCM)

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Songcatcher

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (DVD version with quiz & other special features beats theatrical viewing)

June

Honeydripper 4.0/5

+ Get Smart

The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep

Jane Austen in Manhattan (what was that?)

The Air I Breathe (great cast, interesting premise, not so successful effect)

May

+ Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (wham! boom! whoa! ack! ah!)

Aquamarine (sweet!)

Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing and Charm School

The White Countess

Ushpizin 5.0/5

How to Steal a Million (Peter O'Toole was quite a dish in 1966)

+ Prince Caspian

Match Point (now I remember why I gave up Woody Allen movies...)

+ Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day

The Chess Players (Shatranj Ke Khilari, 1977, dir. Satyajit Ray)

* Raising Arizona

Atonement

April

Mrs. Henderson Presents

Maine Pyar Kiya ("I Love You" or "I Have Loved")

* Millions (on IFC)

Juno

Vera Drake

A History of Violence

* The Dish

March

* My Brilliant Career

Nancy Drew (2007)

Dan in Real Life

3:10 to Yuma (2007)

The Secret Garden (1949, with Margaret Sullivan as Mary, TCM)

*The Boy with Green Hair (thanks to TCM)

Michael Clayton

February

Black Narcissus

* Tsotsi

The Feast of Love (well, that was a waste of time)

* Lagaan

The Jane Austen Book Club (book was better; actual books by Jane Austen better by far)

January

The Sea Hawk

Suburban Girl (no surprise--the book, The Girl's Guide to Hunting and Fishing, was better)

The Legend of Zorro (DH's review: "Banderas made this for his kids, didn't he?")

+ The Bucket List (nowhere to go but up)
