All three of my boys, ages 12, 10 and 5 have Nintendo DS'. They love 'em. In fact, even with a PS2 and Wii in the house, they still prefer linking up on the DS and going head to head on various games. Most of the kids at their schools have the DS as well and even my 3 year old daughter is begging for the pink model for her birthday in October so she can join them for Mario Karts or Kirby.
The PSP's selling point is the FPS games and other Teen and Mature titles with much better graphics. My own experience is that kids under 10 couldn't care less about graphics or frame rates, so long as the games are fun and engaging-- and a large number of DS titles are just that. There are also a some excellent brain teaser-type games. In my mind, there's no question that the DS is the handheld platform of choice for this age group.
