Peter T Chattaway
'Sokay, Christian -- he didn't post those other items until after his first item had been deleted. It just sounds like the other mods, or admins, or whatever didn't get his username, which would have helped them ban him before he could have posted those other items. It's certainly spam, although I have to admire OpenKing89's sense of humor in posting a psychotic rant about gun control in a thread called "Pistol City Holiness." Persona
It's certainly spam, although I have to admire OpenKing89's sense of humor in posting a psychotic rant about gun control in a thread called "Pistol City Holiness." That actually led to my very first A&F "WTF??" and that's how I discovered him. Here's another, and this one really tickes me off: Mimic143 Here. It's like, I make threads in the Film Section for films nobody cares about or sees, and the ONLY reason I do it is in case someone comes to this site in the next, oh I don't know EIGHTY YEARS OR SO, and quite possibly wants to see if anyone at A&F has seen a film... And I always get like two replies -- and then I gotta put up with SPAM??! Sheesh, it's tough being me PS "Any updates bout her?" YEAH, DUNDERHEAD, SHE's DEAD! Geez Louise... M. Dale Prins
This may not be the right place to talk about this, but I think there needs be a discussion regarding putting mild limits on new posters, such as (assuming this is possible within the board's software) holding the first five posts by newbies in a queue until a mod has approved them. Obviously there's downsides to that -- more work for moderators being not the least -- and it probably won't rid all the spam, but it might be a start. I like how things have been going since A&F moved under the IMAGE umbrella, but the only downside (like a car splashing scuzz on your new slacks) is that it opened a floodgate of spammers. Good point, both of you. I'm not really sure what happened, because we didn't change any settings that I know of, but we're getting slammed these days. Greg is in Florence right now and we're trying to upgrade the board this month to the new version, which supposedly has better spam protection. It's taking a little longer than I'd anticipated. I'll see what I can do in the meantime.

M. Dale Prins
Okay. There are 720 "members" of this forum -- a full 20 percent of everyone at A&F -- who, at least based on my semirandom sample, all have the following information in their profile: --- Occupation: google About my avatar: No Information Favorite movies: [their username or slight variant therein] Favorite music: [random country] Favorite creative writing: [their username or slight variant therein] Favorite visual art: 143040 --- It's that 143040 in someone's profile that made me suspicious in the first place, and it's what I used as the filtering to come up with the 720 users. And apparently we're not the only forum that has had "members" using this number before. Anyway, I say kill ban them all. Dale Edited September 23, 2009 by M. Anna J
Anyway, I say kill ban them all. I'm strangely comfortable with it. [/Connor McManus] I'll try to glean common IP addresses and email domains to ban first, and then I'll get rid of them all. Thanks Dale, you're the man!

M. Dale Prins
Uuuu, waitasec. Another big spammer trend I just saw: All the spammers on this board were "born" on April 7th -- every last one of them! I suggest -- nay, mandate! -- that you ban all accounts with birthdates of April 7th. Dale, whose birthday is...hey, wait a minute... But I think we've stemmed the flow a little--we're more vigilant about banning email addresses and IPs. Thanks for your patience, everybody.
