'NIMH' adaptation in works

Paramount smells a rat.

As rodents prove surprisingly likable on the big screen, the studio is developing a feature version of the award-winning children's tale "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH."

Director Neil Burger ("The Illusionist") is in talks to write the screenplay, and former Walden exec Cary Granat is on board to produce. . . .

Formerly relegated to sidekick status, rodents have recently come into their own as leading, er, men. This weekend "G-Force," which centers on a mission undertaken by a group of CG guinea pigs, took the boxoffice cheese, earning $32 million and besting holdover "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince."

Those familiar with "NIMH" noted, however, that the material had elements of a parable and reflected more serious ideas than the comparatively light comedy of "G-Force."

It's likely the new "NIMH" would combine live-action and animation in the manner of "Alvin & the Chipmunks" and other kiddie hybrids. . . .

I for one think a movie called Rats of NIMH at Paramount would be amazing. Think of it! Horrible scientific/ethical quandaries meet The Muppet Movie!

Seriously, though, while I am a fan of Bluth's movie, this is a book that could do to have a more faithful adaptation. This probably won't be that movie, but still.

MGM Options ‘Mrs. Frisby & The Rats Of Nimh;’ Sets ‘Ice Age’s Michael Berg To Hatch Family Franchise

EXCLUSIVE: MGM has acquired the award winning Robert C. O’Brien children’s book Mrs. Frisby & The Rates Of Nimh, and has set Ice Age 5 scribe Michael Berg to write the script. Daniel Bobker and Ehren Kruger will produce through their Bobker/Kruger label. The film will be done as a live-action/CGI hybrid, and Berg is focusing on an origin story in which an imperiled mouse protagonist befriends a comical crew of lab rats as they turn hyper-intelligent. They escape a secret laboratory and become the great minds of vermin civilization, forced to outwit the humans hot on their tails. The hope is to create a franchise.
