Sam Phillips - Cold Dark Night

Recommended Posts

Sam Phillips' Cold Dark Night is fantastic.

The title song, which sounds like it was recorded around a single mic, this EP puts you in that noisy room with Jay Bellerose, Sam Phillips, and guitar that sounds suspiciously like Marc Ribot.

It also has what is a dreams-come-true version of her take on "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear"... so much richer than the version used in the film, without losing any of that creepy snowy-night quality of the original. I've been hoping she'd rerecord this for more than a decade, and wow... it was worth the wait.

And then, after covering my favorite Christmas carol, she goes and sings my *other* favorite: "O Holy Night."

Did I mention there's a "Silent Night" duet with Joe Henry?

My only complaint? It's an EP! Yeah, I'm selfish, but I want a full-length album.
