Nominations for the 2010 Top 100 List

Recommended Posts

It is time to open general nominations for the ArtsandFaith.com Top 100 Films List for 2010.

Here’s how it is going to work.

1) All films on the previous years’ lists will be grandfathered in automatically. According to our preliminary tally, that’s about 155 films. We will create a list of the 155 films for you soon. Update 1/11/10: The grandfathered list of 150 is here.

2) All ArtsandFaith.com members may each nominate up to 25 additional films by replying to this thread, which will stay open until January 23, 2010.

3) Nominations must follow the following format (a little work, true, but that means you really have to believe in what you’re nominating!):

Title:

Director:

Running Time:

Language:

IMDB Link:

YouTube Link (a clip of the film):

Link to the A&F thread on the film (if there is one):

4) We are going to try to get away without worrying too much about the issue of eligibility. If there is some issue concerning eligibility—whether a film has been released in North America or what have you—we can start a thread to discuss that. But until that point we are going to attempt not to sweat this issue too

much.

5) Please save discussion for later (and another thread), so this nominations thread doesn’t get cluttered.

6) If anyone see anything flawed in our proposed system, please point it out ASAP and we'll consider making adjustments.

Happy Nominating!

I don't know exactly how to do this, but I am going to attempt it... Maybe this will be one we'll need to discuss in another thread.

There is little doubt that the films of Stan Brakhage need to be recognized on our Top 100. (If you are unfamiliar with Brakhage, there is an excellent biography Here, with many stills of his work, and links to probably a hundreds more stills Here.)

It will be close to impossible to decide on one particular film, but this is where the words "arts and faith" insted of "spiritual" should help us to firmly include him in the Top 10 of our Top 100. I am nominating the most simple starting point into Brakhage, The Criterion released By Brakhage: An Anthology.

We've been given the opportunity to include him for his filmic avante-garde expressionism, in which he wrestles with who Christ is, and what He can do in our stories. He should also be noted for his inclusion for the more than four hundred films he made in both short and long form, and an entire life dedicated to enhancing, an sometimes fustrating, the way we perceive film, narrative, and our relationships to God.

The easiest way to add Brakhage to our list is to simply nominate the Criterion release.

Title: By Brakhage: An Anthology

Director: Stan Brakhage

Running Time: 243 min

Language: N/A. Silent, or in English.

There are IMDB links on each of the 26 films, and the list for this collection is again found Here.

A few YouTube Links of the various films:

Window Water Baby Moving (1959) ---

(9:36)

Mothlight (1963) ---

(3:25)

Wedlock House: An Intercourse (1959) ---

(10:49)

The heavily labored short film Eyemyth (1972) ---

(:13)

The Act of Seeing With One's Own Eyes (1971) --- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1zVmIacXy4 (32 m)

Of course, all of the films are a billion times better on the DVD, and the DVD includes liner notes, commentary by Stan himself, documentary footage etc etc, it really is an awesome package.

There are several A&F threads on Mr. Brakhage, but my favorite is when Thom and I got to meet some very close and personal friends of his, shortly after his death, and one of the friends had (has) over 80 of the original films. We were able to watch one of Stan's family documentaries, Tortured Dust, which was feature length. That thread is Here, where Ron and many others say, "I don't get it," to which these days I would simply answer, "Yes. Precisely."

Another great A&F Brakhage thread: Avante-Garde Film, amazing.

Entirely up to you. But I'd recommend breaking them up into, say, 5 posts of 5 films....
