I thought voting ended on the 23rd.

That was the original plan. Nominations are now extended to Jan 30.

Dang it's good to be back! Like walking into a long-ago familiar pub on an evening and being greeted by old friends. Christian sitting at a table in the corner with Melquiades Estrada, Beth and Mike waving me over for a cocktail at the bar with Whit Stillman....

Wouldn't you know it would be a list-making exercise that would lure me in. So many movies! What a blast.

Now I don't know what to do with my movie queue: continue catching up with the best of 2009, or shift gears and fill in a few more gaps on my A&F 100 nominees. Of the 150 or so films that have been selected for at least one of the previous lists, I've got about 40 left to see. Maybe I ought to get on that.

I'm slated to see THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC Thursday night, with a newly commissioned score performed live at Christ Church Cathedral here in Vancouver. Maybe I ought to follow that up with... BREAKING THE WAVES, another Danish film about a saintly woman being sacrificed to male cruelty? Or some of the other really demanding more recent films, like THE WERCKMEISTER HARMONIES or CODE UNKNOWN. Some of the Great Classics I still haven't seen, like BICYCLE THIEF, SANSHO THE BAILIFF, PICKPOCKET or all those Bergmans. (Bergmen?) Or some more accessible fare, like ROMERO, DOGMA, WIT, HENRY V. (Actually, I wish there were more not-so-demanding films on my unseen list: too many challenging ones, it can start feeling like a reading list for a grad school course.) I'm quite curious about two films I always confuse in my mind, THE GREEN ROOM and THE GREEN RAY. Or films I bailed on, NIGHT OF THE HUNTER and LA DOLCE VITA and STALKER and RASHOMON. Or...

Well, there we go. Post #3,000. I'm buying everybody a round!

I thought I was getting in just under the wire by nominating some films last weekend, but there's still time.

I thought voting ended on the 23rd.

That was the original plan. Nominations are now extended to Jan 30.

A-ha! I knew somethin' (Christian)-fishy was goin' on.

I'm glad to see these late nominees.

Forgive me if someone already nominated any of these, but I just skimmed the thread and took a few notes and didn't spot any of them (and FWIW, I note that a few of the grandfathered films were re-nominated in this thread, and a few films were nominated twice in this thread but not always under the same title, e.g. one person nominated it under the foreign title and someone else nominated it under the English title).

Also, I apologize for the cheesiness of a few of the trailers, but you work with what you've got:

...a few films were nominated twice in this thread but not always under the same title, e.g. one person nominated it under the foreign title and someone else nominated it under the English title.

Which?

Title: Les invasions barbares (The Barbarian Invasions)

Title: Central do Brasil (Central Station)

Title: The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Title: The Exorcist

Title: Raiders of the Lost Ark

Title: L'heure d'été (Summer Hours)

Good catch with Barbarians: certainly got much chat here when it was out. I need to see that one. Love the fact that it subtly references Jesus Of Montreal.

Central Station and Emily Rose I considered: ended up feeling that for all Emily's strengths (which weighed heavily for me when I first saw it), the weaker elements bump it out of A&F likelihood for me. But it ought to be nommed.

Exorcist: the book was big for me as a new Christian (believe it or not), but (believe it or not) I still haven't seen it. Should I watch the original version, or the "as you've never seen it before" re-issue of a few years back?

Yup, Raiders: nice choice for a pop movie with way more spiritual stuff going on than I ever would have thought: the A&F conversation (and your observations) shifted my perception of that one. Need to look "beyond the popcorn", eh Greg?

And the Videomatica copy of Summer Hours is sitting here, waiting to go into the player. Didn't Overstreet end up dubbing that his fave of '09? Now the difficult choice: catch up on recent films by seeing POLICE, ADJECTIVE tonight on a big screen (and maybe even WENDY & LUCY, if I get there in time) or prep for A&F voting by having an evening at home with Olivier Assayas? Yup, SH would kill two birds with one stone, but PA we won't have always with us...

Ack.

I came up with my nominations after skimming my top-ten lists for the past decade or so. But I completely forgot to consider my top-ten list of all time. And I thus utterly forgot to nominate a few films that really ought to be in here, chief among them:

Title: The Purple Rose of Cairo

Director: Woody Allen

Running Time: 82 min

Language: English

IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089853/

YouTube Link (a clip of the film):

Link to the A&F thread on the film (if there is one): http://artsandfaith.com/index.php?showtopic=15324

This is my second-favorite film of all time, and it's loaded with theological significance, and it's a COMEDY which, as noted before, is a genre that is sorely lacking on the existing versions of the A&F Top 100.

So... can I sneak this one last nomination in there, please? (Please?)

: Which?

I think I was thinking primarily of Ostrov aka The Island there.

Am I just blind or are there really no Lord of the Rings films at all? I don't care to put them on, I guess I just figured they were on here somewhere already.

I think, in regard to double nominating and such, that we just can't tell what's been nominated and what's not anymore.

They are, indeed, on the grandfathered list of nominees carried over from earlier A&F Top 100 lists. However, they are listed there as a single item, rather than as three separate films; I don't know how the new list will handle such situations.

Don't worry about the late submission(s), they'll be included. Also, as a bonus, our interns have compiled some more nominations as well, which will be revealed before the final list is released this week, along with the official survey.

I really hope that Departures (Okuribito, 2008) is among these additional nominations. I somehow failed to see it before yesterday, and it definitely should be nominated for an A&F list.
