anyone have any suggestions for [fiction] books that have a [visual] artist as the primary character (a la my name is asher lev)?

Unveiling, by Suzanne M. Wolfe.

Never Let Me Go's character Tommy is a visual artist, and his creative impulse is essential to the story.

Then there's this little-known fantasy story called Auralia's Colors.

The film seminar at the Glen Workshop next August will focus on films about artists, and a discussion on the artistic process... FWIW.
