Boudu Saved from Drowning - Wow, Renoir is really hit or miss for me. The odious title character and hammy acting made this feel much longer than 90 min.

December

* The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (BluRay is very pretty; green fog plotline is still very stupid)

Made in Dagenham (the English Norma Rae!)

+ Hugo (probably top-10 list-worthy)

The Help (DVD-worthy, but not big-screen time; making-of featurette & interviews with real Mississippi maids worthwhile also)

+ War Horse (wish I could have seen the play, but the movie worked well)

* Buck (with my dad [85], who also approves)

* The Secret of Moonacre (nondemanding, charming visuals; still can't beat the novel)

Buck (on kenmorefield's top 10 list; I concur)

+ Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (character interaction +; OTT action sequences -)

+ Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (It was an MI movie; and no one in the movie is allowed to be prettier than Tom Cruise)

+ TinTin (good fun, very much in the spirit of the originals)

+ The Muppets (perfect antidote to end-of-semester blahs, or any kind of blahs)

November

+ Tower Heist (a Thanksgiving movie on Thanksgiving--nice coincidence!)

* Whale Rider (for course; again very successful)

* Tsotsi (for a course; held up well & students responded positively)

+ Puss in Boots (3D; quite good)

Good Hair (thought-provoking documentary for all hair types)

October

+ Moneyball (baseball, again, makes a great movie!)

+ The Way (one of the best of the year)

Adventureland (sad)

* The Namesake (another course viewing. Still like it.)

Hanna (another case of too-many-things, none done completely well, but Saoirse Ronan is amazing)

+ Real Steel (free, thx to KenMorefield, and Hugh Jackman, so I liked it. Actually, I still liked it)

September

* Lagaan (showing it to my class. Still like it.)

+* The Lion King (3D! but still basically a repeat viewing, even if the original view was in 1994)

* Tangled (still fun! Maybe better than first time)

+ Cowboys & Aliens (Humanity vs. the bugs! Should have been a hit!)

Nanny McPhee Returns (big-name cameos help, no big surprises, but timely & adequate plot, apart from an over-reliance on poo humor)

August

21 (yes, Las Vegas is hell & Kevin Spacey is the devil)

Rango ([Your Western Here] meets Chinatown. Enjoyed it more than expected)

The Other Side of Heaven (not bad, for a Mormon missionary movie starring early Christopher Gorham and Anne Hathaway)

+* Captain America (2D, w/ friend who hadn't seen it; many explosions less entertaining the second time)

+ Crazy Stupid Love (could have been worse, but had free ticket so...)

* Jodhaa Akbar (can't recommend Netflix streaming for this film--HD quality is not up to par)

July

+ Thor (missed the first five minutes, but OK for $1.50!)

+ Captain America: The First Avenger (3D; better than most & essential for next summer's AVENGERS!)

+ Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows, part 2 (in 3D, better than part 1!)

* Waitress (just for fun & a Nathan Fillion fix)

+ Midnight in Paris (first Woody Allen movie I've enjoyed in ages)

June

+ X Men: First Class (good summer movie; a bit heavy on the "born this way" stuff)

The Bounty Hunter (whose stupid idea was this?)

May

Tony Takitani

+ Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (didn't hate it; better than 2 & 3, but am pretty much over Jack Sparrow)

A Town Like Alice (1956, Virginia McKenna & Peter Finch; has to cram too much story into scarcely two hours, but pretty good for the time)

New in Town (very slight rom-com; featurette in which cast & crew reflect on rigors of filming in Manitoba winter was better, which tells you something)

April

Before the Rains (parable about Indian Independence)

+* Jane Eyre (2011--with different friends)

+ Jane Eyre (2011)

March

This Happy Breed (dir. David Lean, 1944; probably quite inspirational at the time; kinda boring now)

The Karate Kid (2009--lacks resonance of the original, but have to love Jackie Chan)

The Princess and the Frog (turns the fairy tale upside down, but otherwise pretty typical Disney fare)

+ The Lincoln Lawyer (my dad liked it more than I expected he would)

Easy A

When in Rome (what can I say? it was a Saturday night; but Kristen Bell should be in more movies)

Get Low (a keeper)

+ Beastly (when I was 15 I'd have loved it, so it will probably be a big hit with the Twilight crowd)

February

Bedtime Stories

+ The Eagle (better than expected, esp. w/ free ticket)

Arranged (lovely little film about friendship, family, love)

The Social Network (long. Aaron Sorkin's style educates and entertains me for about 30 minutes, unfortunately. The acting & directing carry the film)

* Outsourced (a dozen times better than TV sitcom based on it)

Aaja Nachle (Netflix says based on Bergman After the Rehearsal--pretty sure someone just made that up; more like oldtime Rooney & Garland "Let's put on a show! We can use my barn!" The resulting Majnu-Laila production is fab)

January

Red

The Proposal (so bad I slept through about 20 minutes; gives chick flicks a bad name)

*+ The King's Speech (with a friend who hadn't seen it yet; held up very well)

Toy Story 3 (Good, but not my favorite. Looks gorgeous on BluRay, though.)

* Heart and Souls (Robert Downey, Jr. and supporting cast incl. Charles Grodin, Alfre Woodard, & Kyra Sedgwick in a very sweet movie)

The Ramen Girl (2008; sort of wish this could have been the story of Brittany Murphy's life)

Did You Hear About the Morgans? (nowhere to go but up!)
