Hello friends! If any of you are in the Seattle area this May, we'd love to see you at the Eighth Annual Denise Levertov Award, this time featuring the well-loved Sam Phillips. The text from the IMAGE website follows:

Join IMAGE journal, the Seattle Pacific University English Department, Union Church, and singer-songwriter Sam Phillips for the 2011 Denise Levertov Award on May 5, 2011 at 415 Westlake. Sam Phillips will perform a brief acoustic set with violinist Eric Gorfain and give an on-stage interview. This event is free and open to the public, with RSVP requested at http://imagejournal.org/levertov. Dessert reception to follow.

Sam Phillips is a critically acclaimed, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter whose many albums include Martinis and Bikinis, A Boot and a Shoe, and Don’t Do Anything. Her music appears on the television show Gilmore Girls and on Alison Krauss and Robert Plant’s Grammy-winning Raising Sand. Her current project is The Long Play, a subscription-based art and music installation on the web offering five EPs and a full digital album exclusively at www.samphillips.com.

The Denise Levertov Award is named for one of the twentieth century's greatest poets. Levertov, who spent her last years in Seattle, embraced the landscape and culture of the Pacific Northwest. Her identity as a Christian believer--a pilgrim whose faith was inextricably entwined with doubt--became another important facet of her work, particularly in her later poetry. The Levertov Award is presented annually in the spring to an artist or creative writer whose work exemplifies a serious and sustained engagement with the Judeo-Christian tradition. Past recipients include poets Madeline DeFrees and Franz Wright, nonfiction writers Kathleen Norris, Thomas Lynch, and Eugene Peterson, and fiction writers Bret Lott and Ron Hansen.

The Denise Levertov Award event was a beautiful thing.

Sam did two short sets of music, she was witty and thoughtful during our onstage interview, Greg Wolfe gave her an excellent introduction (Sam's life story doesn't make introductions easy), and the high spirits in the room afterward all made for an unforgettable evening.

Thanks, Anna J, Taylor Morris, Dyana Herron, and everybody who helped out! What a night!

Here's a snapshot from the after-party.

This morning I noticed a splash of publicity at Notable Music. and at the Seattle P-I. If anybody else sees anything about the event, please share.

One of the highlights of the event: Asking Sam to tell the audience the "top 5 things they should know about accompanist Eric Gorfain." (Eric is a fantastic guy, and a brilliant violinist who leads The Section Quartet.) Sam listed four noteworthy details, and then added, "And finally, I don't think this has been announced publicly yet, but... he's my husband." It's true. They were married a few months ago. And they glow when they're onstage together.
