Disney Tinkers With Big Screen 'Peter Pan' Prequel

Disney chief Bob Iger told shareholders at the company’s annual shareholders meeting on Wednesday in Salt Lake City that the studio is still mulling bringing “Peter and the Starcatchers,” a prequel to “Peter Pan,” to the big screen.

“Peter and the Starcatchers ,” a best-selling children's novel written by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, was published by Disney’s Hyperion books in 2004.

“We considered making [it] a movie,” Iger said, noting they went as far as hiring a screenwriter to adapt the book. “We haven't made a decision on that yet.”

In the meantime, Iger said the company’s been testing the material onstage -- first at the La Jolla Playhouse, and currently in an Off Broadway production at the New York Theater Workshop. . . .

Disney Sets Jesse Wigutow To Script ‘Peter And The Starcatchers’

EXCLUSIVE: Disney has hired writer Jesse Wigutow to adapt the best-selling children’s novel, Peter and the Starcatchers, the 2004 book published by Disney’s Hyperion which gives the backstory for the iconic Peter Pan character.

Co-authored by Dave Barry and Ridley Pierson, the book has become a hot property, with the current Broadway adaptation having just nabbed nine Tony Award nominations, including Best Play. Peter and the Starcatchers is the first in a series of books by the authors, giving franchise potential to the project. . . .
