You know, it *would* be pretty simple for me to create a dedicated calendar on the board to hold all these dates. But someone would have to manage it...

Could be great fun! Could you go ahead and set it up, maybe not publicly accessible until I get a chance to mess around with it, see how it works, and how much work it would be to fill in?

Thanks, Alan!

What a strange sensation that was! Particularly for one who takes such inordinate interest in movie dates.

Went to see THE LAKE HOUSE last night with my wife. (Ah, a movie date!). A film with a central preoccupation with time, and dates. And at a certain point the characters arrange something for 9:10 the next evening, July 10 2006. So their conversation was occurring on July 9 2006 - the very date on which we were watching the film. How often does that happen! Very cool.

There were several other dates on documents and newspapers, and perhaps even in dialogue, during the film, so if anyone decides to see the film tonight just to experience temporal oneness with Sandra Bullock or Keanu Reeves, and feels like taking along a notebook to harvest a few more dates for our project...

The date's already covered, but just for the record:

Gulliver's Travels (1939) -- November 5, 1699 -- Lemuel Gulliver is shipwrecked on the shores of Lilliput.

From Half Nelson, a series of dates with historical events, given as mini-reports by students:

May 17, 1954 - Brown v. Board of Education

Sept. xx, 1971 - Attica Riots (I missed the date - or just couldn't understand the slurred speaking.)

Sept. 11, 1971 - Allende killed in coup

Nov. 1, 1977 - Harvey Milk elected in SF

MY NIGHT AT MAUD'S

11:30 "That Monday, December 21st, i suddenly knew, without a doubt, that Francoise would be my wife."

22:08 "Tomorrow is Christmas Eve."

It seems the central action of the film - Jean-Louis's night at Maud's - takes place in the early hours of December 25, following midnight mass.

Much later in the film, when Francoise tells Jean-Louis they're going to church, she says "It's Sunday." Which must be Dec 27, and the preceding events (him driving her home in the snow storm) would have been Dec 26.

(The film was released in 1969. The last December 21 which occurred on a Monday would have been in 1964.)

Two dates, one that plugs a hole in our calendar:

February 23, 1943 is the date of Sophie Scholl's trial (and the trial of her brother and friend).

August 22, 1972 (from a movie trivia game I was playing) - the date of a bank robbery in Dog Day Afternoon (Al Pacino).

My wife was watching PAYCHECK the other day, and I wandered by the TV and spotted the date Oct 19th -- I was told it was the last date on which the protagonist could remember anything. (Didn't watch it, so this is second-hand info, but there ya go!)

GAME 6

"Although Nicky has grown up in New York, he is a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan and the film is set on October 25, 1986, the day of the most Shakespearian of sporting events, Game 6 of the World Series. The Red Sox are poised to win..."
