Universal Unwrapping 'The Mummy' Franchise
Universal has decided to unwrap its billion-grossing Mummy franchise. Prometheus co-writer John Spaihts has been hired to write the screenplay for a feature reboot, and Sean Daniel, who produced the franchise's first three pictures, will return to produce the new iteration. . . .

To be directed by... Len Wiseman, whose last four directorial credits (Total Recall, the Hawaii Five-O pilot episode, Live Free or Die Hard, Underworld: Evolution) were all either sequels or remakes. Indeed, the only original credit on his directorial resume is the original Underworld.

Ah well, I guess this means Kate Beckinsale will be in the next Mummy, at any rate.

Oh, and a thought occurs to me: the first two Brendan Fraser-starring Mummy films were directed by Stephen Sommers, who went on to make the vampire-and-werewolves movie Van Helsing. Wiseman, on the other hand, started with vampires-and-werewolves in the two Underworld movies, before jumping to The Mummy.

Universal's cinematic Dark Universe is in danger of being mummified.
Just five months after Universal released a much-discussed cast photo promising a slew of movies starring the likes of Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe and Javier Bardem — all drawn on characters like the Invisible Man, Wolf Man and Frankenstein in its stable of classic horror films — none of the projects appears to have a pulse.
Writer-producers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan, who were hired as the monster universe architects, have departed the franchise, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. . . .
