List of the submissions.

So far I've seen and I'll keep my running list here, rather than several posts):

War Witch (Canada)

A Royal Affair (Denmark)

The Intouchables (France)

Barbara (Germany)

Caesar Must Die (Italy)

Beyond the Hills (Romania)

Pieta (South Korea)

Sister (Switzerland)

Blancanieves (Spain)

Bad Intentions (Peru)

Lore (Australia)

The Clown (Brazil)

The Third Half (Macedonia)

Amour (Austria)

No (Chile)

My favorites at this point: The Intouchables, Caesar Must Die, War Witch, Blancanieves, Amour. The Clown has been growing on me.

The shortlist; the ones I've seen are in bold:

  • Austria, "Amour," Michael Haneke, director;
    Canada, "War Witch," Kim Nguyen, director; [everyone in Canada calls this film Rebelle, FWIW]
    Chile, "No," Pablo Larraín, director;
    Denmark, "A Royal Affair," Nikolaj Arcel, director;
    France, "The Intouchables," Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, directors;
    Iceland, "The Deep," Baltasar Kormákur, director;
    Norway, "Kon-Tiki," Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, directors;
    Romania, "Beyond the Hills," Cristian Mungiu, director;
    Switzerland, "Sister," Ursula Meier, director.

I also have a screener for The Intouchables, so I should probably watch that soon.

Of the five I've seen The Intouchables is my favorite, but that could change this weekend when I see Amour.

Actually, I'll stick with The Intouchables.

Yes and no. Last year was the year that it would have been eligible for, but Belgium nominated Bullhead instead.

Canada has a bit of a run going. War Witch/Rebelle is the third film in 3 years to be nominated, 4th in last 7 and 6 of 7 that have at least made the short list. When I asked the director about this, he said the pressure now is to win. (Last win for Canada was Denys Arcand for The Barbarian Invasions in 2003.)
