*+ The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013--we intended to see Saving Mr. Banks, but found only front row seats available, so exchanged tickets for this; I didn't mind after all)

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947, Danny Kaye--on TCM, watched w/ Dad, who wanted to see the new movie)

+ The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013--preview screening. I enjoyed it, but critic colleague Ken M. found it tedious)

+ Captain Phillips (well worth full price, but I missed it on first run & just caught in on last chance in cheap theater--really good)

+ Frozen (I wish I liked this as much as everyone else seems to)

+ The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (hated it with a desolate, fiery, draconic passion. Bloated with unwatchable orcs and cgi action sequences.)

* Kind Hearts and Coronets

+ The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (free ticket, so how bad could it be? Actually, OK. Kept interest for near 2.5 hrs--3, incl. previews).

November

+ Philomena (My father & I both appreciated this contemplative and moving film. Judi Dench is excellent.)

Whale Rider (postcolonial lit class viewing. Still fine.)

Where the Wild Things Are (Turns out I was right not to rush right out & see this one. RyanH nailed it--destroys the wild joy and sweetness of the book with dullness.)

+ Thor: The Dark World (3D, because of timing; kept me awake, but there's something wrong with a superhero movie in which the antihero is far more interesting than the hero and the hero's damsel might as well have been a horcrux.)

* The Importance of Being Earnest (1952--the only worthwhile version. For British Lit class. How good is it? 70 minute class sat through full 90 minutes without a single move toward the door. Win.)

* Tsotsi (for Postcolonial course)

October

* Bride and Prejudice (for Contemporary British/Postcolonial Lit course. A bit of fluff, but irresistible fun. Students now have to think about it, though)

September

+ The Butler (yes, it's a message movie, but the message was effectively conveyed)

+ Austenland (actually better than the novel, because the visuals are riduculously funny, writing is better, and the faux British accents & satire on romance novel fantasies really work, but without being mean or overly crude)

* Lagaan (for Contemporary British/Postcolonial Lit course--Netflix subtitles get slightly ahead of dialogue & spoil the plot at a few points)

August

+ The World's End (As Spike would say, "Now that was fun.")

+ Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters (best fun of the month. Audience applauded. Take that, Star Trek, etc.)

Les Aventures Extraordinaires d'Adele Blanc-Sec (DVD. Charming, witty action-adventure based on French graphic novels. Fun!)

+ Two Guns (I'm sorry my father & I wasted time & money on this. I'm sorry Denzel W. and Mark W. wasted talent on it.)

+ The Way, Way Back (suddenly occurs to me that with Toni Collette as the clueless but well-intentioned mother, this movie is a sort of bookend to About a Boy)

* The Lavender Hill Mob (Alec Guinness & Ealing Studios wins)

July

My Favorite Year (somehow I don't think I ever saw this before now. It's a keeper.)

+ The Lone Ranger (what was that masked mess of a movie?)

* Seven Faces of Dr. Lao (1964; is it wrong that I still love this movie even though Tony Randall plays Chinese Dr. Lao? He also plays 6 other "faces," and a cameo as himself, so why not? )
+ Red 2 (great cast almost saves this from sequel hell, but despite amped up violence, doesn't quite match Red. Anthony Hopkins is still bringing the brilliance, though)
+ Monsters University (entertaining & educational!)
+ Despicable Me 2 (3D--worth it for the ecstatic reactions of the kids around me who evidently had never seen the phenomenon before. Movie pretty good, too.)
+ Kon-Tiki (favorite adventure of the summer so far, and Pål Sverre Hagen is very handsome)
As It Is in Heaven (2005, Sweden; heavy on the cliches, but characters & story still engaging somehow)
+* Much Ado About Nothing (Chelsea, Chapel Hill; what? I took another friend who hadn't seen it yet)

June
+ Man of Steel (too much destruction, Superman too sad, but at least it wasn't the Lone Ranger)
+* Much Ado About Nothing (Colony, Raleigh; just because; and also took a friend who hadn't seen it)
+ Much Ado About Nothing (Carolina Theater, Durham; delightful + dinner w/ friends from other side of state)

May
+ Now You See Me (good fun with a good cast)
+ Epic (not epic, but pleasant enough)
Miss Minoes (sweet Flemish cat-girl played by Melisandre before she went completely evil! Thanks, Netflix!)
+ Star Trek Into Darkness (well, that was a lot of JJ Abrams claptrap. Benedict Cumberbatch can't save everything)
+ The Great Gatsby (looked fabulous; wish I cared more about these beautiful people)
+ Iron Man 3 (problematic reviews from respected critics were fully justified, but it was a perfectly adequate post-grading escape)

April
One of those months without movies.

March
+ Jack the Giant Slayer (could have been better, but not as bad as reviewed. Nicholas Hoult is the future.)
+ Oz the Great and Powerful (Oz the colorful and incoherent)
How Do You Know? (one thing I do know: this movie was one lazy attempt at a romcom. It wasn't even in his kiss.)
+ Silver Linings Playbook (OK, Jennifer Lawrence totally deserved that Oscar; so did everyone else in this movie)

February
* Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (on TCM--always ambivalent about this one--great music, dancing, and cinematography. Terrible story.)
* Singing in the Rain (on TCM--always a delight)
+ Warm Bodies (and now for something completely different from Zero Dark Thirty. Redemptive zombie rom-com worked for me, esp since I had free ticket)
+ Zero Dark Thirty (worthwhile, but weirdly abstract, sort of like a History Channel documentary without voiceovers and recaps; will probably win an Oscar just for its subject)

January
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (better than expected)
The Queen of Versailles (tragedy of the rich and clueless; very difficult to sum up in few words)
Another Year (2010)
Angel (2007; like Funny Girl, without music or comedy. Saved by the ever-incandescent Romola Garai in a ridiculous role, supported by Sam Neill & Michael Fassbender)

29 - Vertigo 50stars.gif (Hitchcock, 1958). Second viewing - the big screen makes all the difference. This is a bold, tragic Hitchcock thriller - worthy of its position on Sight and Sound.
30 - 28 Days Later 50stars.gif (Danny Boyle, 2002). Fascinating - more layered and nuanced than the first viewing. This is a flawed masterpiece.

October

20 - Dead Man* 50stars.gif (Jim Jarmusch, 1995).

23 - The 400 Blows 50stars.gif (Truffaut, 1959). Second viewing - I think I saw this the first time when I was maybe thirteen or fourteen. It's lodged itself in my memory though I didn't know that it was _this_ film that lodged myself into my memory until I saw it again. What an incredible, heartbreaking film. It's hard to imagine the Dardenne brothers (or, indeed, Wes Anderson, and so many other films and filmmakers) without this film.

26 - The Breakfast Club* 4.0/5 (John Hughes, 1985).

27 - The Counselor* 4.5/5 (Ridley Scott, 2013).

Let's see if I can actually stick with this for more than a week.

* = repeat viewing

January

Indie Game: The Movie (2012) — Really liked this.

Let The Bullets Fly (2012) — Really liked this.

Scrooge (1970)* — Loved this as a kid, haven't watched since late '80s. The non-musical parts are mostly good (the non-Dickensian "hell" scene is just awful, though). The songs, though, have not help up well over the years.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)* — Another movie I loved as a kid, revisited. Still enjoyable, though it really starts to drag near the end.

Moneyball (2012) — Really enjoyed this.

The Expendables 2 (2012) — Enjoyed this, maybe? It fixed some of the editing and (lack of) self-parody problems from the first, at the loss of a coherent story.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) — As is the norm for me, I get really excited to see a movie in the theater and then finally see it almost two years later (totally not in the theater either). Love le Carre's novel, love the miniseries, liked the movie. There are a lot of striking images with almost no continuity in the visual narrative. I can't imagine someone not familiar with the book or BBC version getting much of anything out of this. Great casting, acting, etc.

February

Three Stars (2010) — Documentary on Michelin three-star restaurants. Somehow too long at 90 minutes, despite some nice interviews and cinematography.

The Cabin in the Woods (2012) — As good as everyone said. Though, still lacking something that made me love it and not like it a lot.

Live Free or Die Hard (2007) — The last 15 minutes are kind of dumb, still, but I'm surprised at how well the rest of the movie held up. The interplay between Justin Long and Willis is still a lot of fun, too.

A Simple Life (2012) — Sometimes a movie builds up so much good will that I really can't find any fault with it. This is one of those movies.

March

Tyler Perry's Madea Gets a Job: The Play (2013) — I enjoyed some of this, even though I am not the target audience. But clocking in at almost two and a half hours, this was a good hour too long.

Summer Wars (2010) — Just perfect.

Hey, I made it through all of 2012! Time to try again:

January

Django Unchained - awesome date movie with my ladyfriend (for real)

Django Unchained - 2nd time with my 15 year old, comparing and contrasting it with 'Huck Finn,' which he's currently reading

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World - completely won over by its romanticism, Knightley's acting, and the bits with Martin Sheen

Moonrise Kingdom - 4th viewing, just as delightful; growing appreciation for the script
