NBooth Report post Posted December 24, 2017 (edited) Not sure it's quite fair--and I liked the newer movie--but the original A Nightmare on Elm Street is a better version of the 2017 It. (For that matter, though for a slightly different reason, so is A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge) Edited December 24, 2017 by NBooth

(Although I think they would make a great double feature--Dunkirk playing first I actually thought Darkest Hour was the better of the two movies, but I appear to be in the minority. Andrew Report post Posted December 25, 2017 Darkest Hour is still in my screener pile (I'll view it in the coming week if it gets any noms in the NCFCA), but I expect I would agree with you, as I was immensely disappointed with Dunkirk.

One of the things I preferred was that DH was able to convey--at least to me--that the principals really were uncertain about the outcome. That gave it much more emotional power in my viewing. I appreciated the cinematography of Dunkirk, but in part because of the BIG MOVIE structure, it would have seemed as anti-conventional for the last mission to fail as it would have been, say, for all the rebels to get wiped out at the end of Star Wars (spoilers for Star Wars, I guess). Evan C Report post Posted January 6, 2018 If I interpreted the final scene of Thelma correctly, and I'm not 100% sure I did, Lady Macbeth is a better version of Thelma. Also, Frozen is a better version of Thelma.
Joel Mayward Report post Posted January 8, 2018 For 2017 films about the same WWII event: Dunkirk > Their Finest > Darkest Hour. They're all worth viewing, but for entirely different reasons.
Evan C Report post Posted November 28, 2018 For the woman/women fall on hard times and look to illegal means of solving their financial troubles, I thought Can You Ever Forgive Me? was a better version of Widows.
Darrel Manson Report post Posted December 11, 2018 Colette vs. The Wife: Which is better?
Andrew Report post Posted December 11, 2018 Haven't seen The Wife yet, but I found Colette to be quite engrossing, though its hagiographic tendencies are highly problematic. Boy Erased is a better conversion therapy film than The Miseducation of Cameron Post. Beautiful Boy > Ben Is Back, on addressing the havoc that addiction plays in the lives of young addicts and the families who care about him.
Evan C Report post Posted December 16, 2018 (edited) For films about strong female monarchs who embrace Catholicism as a part of their liberalism, anachronistic pro-LGBTQ beliefs, and as a rebellion against their patriarchal, misogynistic, homophobic, fundamentalist, Protestant courts, Mary Queen of Scots is a better version of The Girl King. I never thought I would write that sentence or see a second movie which links Catholicism to the female protagonist's feminism and threat it poses to the toxic masculinity linked with Protestantism. I totally thought of Jauja while watching Zama, and couldn't remember the title, just the image of a soldier on a lush green beach and the aspect ratio. John Drew Report post Posted May 3 Us is a better version of the recent remake of Pet Sematary (both feature “unique” family dynamics), but they would make an interesting double feature.
Evan C Report post Posted June 8 For the first half of Ma, I thought it was a better version of Greta. But after it finished, I think Greta is the better version of Ma. They both suffer from serious flaws, just very different ones, so I'm not sure which one I liked less.
