Are the Oscars really in March? Why does that seem late to me? I thought the Academy and/or ABC moved the show date up so as to better capitalize on awards season, or not risk "awards-viewing fatigue," or whatever. Maybe the Oscars have always aired later than early March?

Heck, I'm still surprised that the Super Bowl airs in February. Always thought of it as a January event, but it hasn't been that way for years, if it ever was.

Lately they've tended to happen in February. But yeah, this year they're on March 2.

They took place in February from 2011 to 2013. They took place March 7 in 2010. They took place in February from 2007 to 2009. They took place March 5 in 2006. They took place in February from 2004 to 2005. They took place March *23* in 2003, March 24 in 2002, March 25 in 2001, March 26 in 2000, March 21 in 1999... And in 1988, they took place in *April*.

The first ever Academy Awards ceremony was May 16, 1929.  There were two ceremonies in 1930: April 3rd and November 5th.  The ceremony stayed in November for 1931 and 1932.  There was no awards ceremony in 1933, but starting in 1934, the ceremony has always been in March, February, or April, although it seems March has been the most frequent.  The latest date I can find since then is 1961: April 17th 1966: April 18th.

And note, three of the Academy nominees (American Hustle, The Great Gatsby, 12 Years a Slave) were nominated in the "period" section of the Costume Designers Guild. The Grandmaster and The Invisible Woman were not nominated by the CDG. (CDG nominees that got "snubbed" are Dallas Buyers Club, Saving Mr Banks and all of the "contemporary" and "fantasy" nominees.)

And the winners of the Costume Designers Guild awards are... 12 Years a Slave (period film), The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (fantasy film) and Blue Jasmine (contemporary film). 12 Years a Slave is the only one of those films nominated for the Oscar, partly because no contemporary or fantasy films were nominated for the Oscar.
