This is a lot of fun. It doesn’t have the same perversity as the previous movie, but it evokes such a sense of wonder. It’s—and this risks sounding pretentious—but it’s a blockbuster with a genuine sense of transcendence. That’s rare.

I haven't seen the film yet, but Matt Zoller Seitz's comments on Twitter, especially his reference to this being like a "religious" film, really piqued my interest. With so many negative reviews, I'd wondered if that had pulled a Prometheus (fantastic trailer, not-so-fantastic albeit ambitious film).

His review is what convinced me that I needed to see the movie, and I’m glad I did.

Well, I spent this Saturday feeling like the crotchety old Mr. Wilson that I probably am...first by the kids that were in my seat, talked during the whole movie ("what did he say?" asked the ten year-old whenever Ken Watanabe talked), but mostly by the movie that was so suffused in teal and smoke that I think I only saw about four actual shots. I know this was probably an intentional choice, because when the smoke cleared after Mothra's appearance there was light, but intentional or not, 2 hours plus is a long time to sit in the dark listening to explosions and guttural animal noises.
