Oscars 2016: Best Director

Recommended Posts

The Directors Guild Award nominees:

  • Alejandro G. Iñárritu, The Revenant
  • Tom McCarthy, Spotlight
  • Adam McKay, The Big Short
  • George Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road
  • Ridley Scott, The Martian

Also, there's a new award for first-time feature directors. The nominees are:

  • Fernando Coimbra, The Wolf at the Door
  • Joel Edgerton, The Gift
  • Alex Garland, Ex Machina
  • Marielle Heller, The Diary of a Teenage Girl
  • Laszlo Nemes, Son of Saul

The winners will be announced February 6.

The main DGA award is particularly significant because it has happened only 7 times in the award's 60+ year history that the DGA winner did not go on to win the Oscar for Best Director (and of course, for much of the 20th century, the Oscar for Best Director frequently went to the film that won the Oscar for Best Picture -- though the correlation has not been that consistent since the turn of the millennium). In fact, I don't think anyone has ever won the Oscar for Best Director without at least being *nominated* for the DGA award.

It bums me out that there doesn't seem to be any way to add polls to existing threads in the current version of the board, but oh well.

The nominees for the Oscar are (with the ones I've seen in bold):

  • Adam McKay, The Big Short
  • George Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road
  • Alejandro G. Iñárritu, The Revenant
  • Lenny Abrahamson, Room
  • Tom McCarthy, Spotlight
So the Academy basically agrees with the DGA on four nominees, and switched out Ridley Scott for Lenny Abrahamson.

And the winners are... Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Alex Garland.
