The big winners:

  • Palme d'Or: Ken Loach, 'I, Daniel Blake'
  • Grand Prix: Xavier Dolan, "It's Only The End of the World"
  • Jury Prize: Andrea Arnold, "American Honey"
  • Best Actress: Jaclyn Jose, "Ma Rosa"
  • Best Actor: Shahab Hosseini, "The Salesman"
  • Best Director: Olivier Assayas, "Personal Shopper" & Cristian Mungui, "Graduation"
  • Best Screenplay: Asghar Farhadi, "The Salesman"
  • Camera d'Or: "Divines," Houda Benyamina

This makes Loach one of a very select few filmmakers who have won the Palme twice. No wins for the Dardennes, Almodovar, Refn, Verhoeven.

Really? I haven't paid all *that* close attention, but I've heard a lot of grumbling from people who were there.

New, well-regarded films from folks like Park and Verhoeven are more than enough to get me excited, but I'm very aware that not everyone likes those guys.

Beyond those two, many great filmmakers had films at Cannes this year (Almodovar! Arnold! Assayas! Dardenne! Jarmusch! Kore-eda! Spielberg!). Minor films or no, this was a rare year when many films captured my attention.
