I've seen all of these except The Eage Huntress, Command and Control, and The Ivory Game.

I suspect, based on social media buzz that the James Baldwin film has a lot of momentum, though I probably liked Tower  and Zero Days better. Then again, Newtown is definitely in my Top 10, so of course it didn't even make the short list.

The American Cinema Editors have announced their nominees for the Eddie Awards:

BEST EDITED DOCUMENTARY (FEATURE):

13th
Amanda Knox
The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years
O.J.: Made in America
Weiner

The winner will be announced January 27.

Note: the only film that got both an Eddie nomination and a PGA nomination is O.J.: Made in America. And only three of the Eddie nominees are on the Oscar shortlist.

The Writers Guild has announced its nominees in this category:

  • Author: The JT LeRoy Story, Written by Jeff Feuerzeig; Amazon Studios
  • Command and Control, Telescript by Robert Kenner & Eric Schlosser, Story by Brian Pearle and Kim Roberts; Based on the book Command and Control by Eric Schlosser; American Experience Films
  • Zero Days, Written by Alex Gibney; Magnolia Pictures

I believe this guild only nominates its own members, so that may or may not explain why only two of the nominees overlap with the Academy's shortlist (and why there is no overlap at all with the Eddie or PGA nominations).

The winner will be announced February 19.

The winner will be announced February 18.

Note: only three of these nominees are on the Oscar shortlist for this category.

I somehow missed this when the nominees were announced last week... the Directors Guild of America has nominated, in this category:

  • OTTO BELL, The Eagle Huntress
  • EZRA EDELMAN, O.J.: Made in America
  • JOSH KRIEGMAN & ELYSE STEINBERG, Weiner
  • RAOUL PECK, I Am Not Your Negro
  • ROGER ROSS WILLIAMS, Life, Animated

This is apparently the first DGA Award nomination for *all* of the directors nominated in this category.

All five of the nominated films are on the Oscar shortlist; three of them (The Eagle Huntress, O.J.: Made in America and Life Animated) overlap with the Producers Guild Awards; two of them (O.J.: Made in America and Weiner) overlap with the Eddie Awards; and none of them overlap with the Writers Guild Awards.

The winner will be announced February 4.

The nominees for the Oscar are (with the ones I've seen in bold):

  • Fire at Sea
  • I Am Not Your Negro
  • Life, Animated
  • O.J.: Made in America
  • 13th

So, basically: two of the PGA nominees, two of the Eddie nominees, none of the WGA nominees, two of the Cinema Audio Society nominees, and three of the DGA nominees. The one film to be nominated by *everybody* (except for the WGA, which didn't overlap with the Oscar nominees at all) is O.J.: Made in America.

The Motion Picture Sound Editors have nominated:

  • 13th
  • Amanda Knox
  • Before the Flood
  • Passage to Mars
  • The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years
  • The Eagle Huntress
  • The Ivory Game
  • The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble

So, only one Oscar nominee, i.e. 13th.

The winner will be announced February 19.

The Cinema Audio Society is thus the first guild to give its documentary award to a film other than O.J.: Made in America, even though it was nominated.

None of the WGA nominees were nominated for the Oscar in this category, so the WGA win doesn't help with the prediction-making.

And the winner is... The Music of Strangers, which also won the Cinema Audio Society award. Sound editors and sound mixers sure seem to like that film, which hasn't really figured in any of the other documentary-award chatter I've heard.
